Abu Dhabi Police[ said](https://x.com/ADPoliceHQ/status/2034930835971879035) Friday that 109 people of various nationalities had been detained for “filming sites and events and disseminating inaccurate information,” conduct that authorities said could “stir public opinion and spread rumors.” **Read more:** [_Trump's Iran War Set to Boost Profits For These Defense Contractors_](https://time.com/article/2026/03/19/trump-iran-war-set-to-boost-profits-for-these-defense-contractors/) Radha Stirling, CEO of [Detained in Dubai](https://www.detainedindubai.org/), an organization that provides legal assistance to foreign individuals in the UAE, said some of those arrested were from European and Asian countries, and that similar arrests had also taken place in Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. The response fits into a broader wartime effort by the UAE to protect more than its physical security. For years, the country has marketed itself as a haven of luxury, security and business-friendly predictability, an image amplified by state-supported social media influencers. Since the start of the Iran war, local and national authorities in the UAE say they have made 189 arrests in connection with alleged violations of the country’s cybercrime laws. State media [reported](https://www.wam.ae/en/article/174do9f-attorney-general-orders-arrest-defendants-various) that on March 15, the UAE’s attorney general referred 35 people to expedited trial for posting videos on social media that “promote misleading narratives,” based on an investigation and “electronic monitoring.” Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi [said](https://www.wam.ae/en/article/173udwn-uae-attorney-general-warns-against-sharing) in a statement that recording and sharing content related to Iran’s missile attacks into the UAE can incite public panic and create “a false impression of the country's actual situation.” Under UAE law, “sharing” can include posting on social media as well as sending or forwarding content via messaging applications. Penalties can include up to two years in prison, fines ranging from AED 20,000 ($5,444) to AED 200,000 ($54,449), or both. Foreign nationals can also face deportation, Stirling said. TIME has reached out to the UAE Embassy in Washington for comment. As the U.S. and Israel continue their military operations against Tehran, major cities in the Gulf next to the Strait of Hormuz are bearing the brunt of Iran’s attacks. Iran has vowed retaliation against oil facilities, U.S. military bases and American businesses across the region in an effort to pressure neighboring countries to distance themselves from Washington. To date, the UAE has intercepted 334 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles, and 1,714 drones since the beginning of the war in Iran, the UAE’s Ministry of Defense [said](https://x.com/modgovae/status/2033870782473113960). The attacks have killed 8 people and injured an additional 158\. But the Iranian strikes have inflicted a different kind of damage on the UAE as well, one that goes beyond casualty figures and damaged buildings. They have shaken the country’s carefully cultivated image as a place where wealth, tourism and global business can continue insulated from the turmoil around it. That image has been built in part through content creators. In January, the UAE hosted its annual 1 Billion Followers Summit, with YouTube star MrBeast and actor Will Smith among those attending. During the summit, the government also expanded its Golden Visa program to major influencers. The renewable visa allows recipients to bring their families to the UAE and live in the country for 10 years while enjoying tax-free income. Now, as panicked tourists and major American [tech companies](https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/global-brands-shut-middle-east-stores-conflict-causes-chaos-2026-03-02/) begin pulling back from the region, the UAE is defending its brand in wartime not only with missile interceptors, but also with a tightening grip on speech. The British Embassy in the UAE also warned against recording and posting images or videos of damage caused by Iran’s missiles after a 60-year-old tourist was reportedly charged on March 9 for cybercrimes. The man said he immediately deleted the video when asked by authorities and meant no harm, but was still charged, according to Detained in Dubai’s Stirling. “There are countless images, videos and news reports circulating online about the conflict. People understandably assume that if something is already widely shared or published by media outlets, it must be acceptable to comment on or repost it. In the UAE, that assumption can be extremely dangerous,” she added. The latest arrests also build on an existing regulatory structure governing full-time influencers, who must apply for permits in order to publish paid promotional content. Those permits must be renewed annually and are available only to people deemed to be of “good conduct” who have not previously violated media-content rules. Cathryn Grothe, a senior research analyst at Freedom House, said manipulating online content, arresting social media users and issuing restrictive media guidelines all fit the government’s longstanding effort to control the narrative online. “The government’s content restrictions and manipulation not only distort reality but could encourage self-censorship and hinder people’s ability to access accurate information about the conflict,” she said. Authorities have also sought to project calm. On Monday, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al-Nahyan and his defense minister appeared publicly at a café in Dubai Mall, state media images showing them having coffee among shoppers. For residents like Tetiana Skoryna, life in Dubai has, at least outwardly, begun to feel normal again, despite the emergency alerts that occasionally signal an Iranian missile crossing into UAE territory. Skoryna, a Ukrainian influencer who has lived in the city for 11 years, posted a TikTok [video](https://www.tiktok.com/@tetianaskoryna/video/7612261343298735368) praising the UAE’s missile defense system and strong leadership soon after Iran’s attacks, echoing a theme that has appeared in other creators’ content. “I'm doing the same routine: malls are open. I'm going to the mall, or going to the grocery today,” she said. “I don't see any panic from people.” One of the most recent [videos](https://www.tiktok.com/@tetianaskoryna/video/7618508004274572552) she posted was her making plans for Eid Al-Fitr while taking a leisurely stroll a few blocks away from Dubai International Financial Center, where an Iranian drone attacked one of the office buildings. A similar sense of reassurance was projected by an 18-year-old German resident, Juli, who helped launch a [TikTok trend](https://www.tiktok.com/@julisjoking/video/7612184901546380567) with a video asking, “You live in Dubai, aren’t you scared?” The trend prompted questions online about whether it was part of a paid government campaign. In an interview with TIME, Juli denied being paid to post the video.
