Launched in 2013 as a hip-hop idol group, the seven-member squad steadily built a global following by speaking authentically about their anxieties, passions, frustrations, and dreams. By the time they announced a group hiatus in order to complete mandatory military service in 2022, their fandom, known as ARMY, was [estimated to be in the tens of millions](https://www.technologyreview.com/2023/02/16/1067943/kpop-fans-shaping-elections-worldwide/). Almost four years later, RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook are back. Their fifth album, titled _Arirang_, is a much-anticipated musical statement about who BTS is in 2026, and where they might be going next. It’s also about where BTS comes from. "Arirang," the Korean traditional folk song from which BTS gets the name of their new album, isn't just one song. As with any centuries-old oral tradition, musical or otherwise, there are many versions of "Arirang"—around 3,600 regional variations. There is no one definition of what “Arirang” means or is. Like language, it is a living, ever-shifting thing directly tied to the joy, sorrow, longing, and resilience of the Korean people. ## **_Arirang_** **places BTS in a centuries-old tradition** During Japanese occupation in the early 20th century, “Arirang” was a song of resistance. Following the division of the Korean peninsula in 1945, it has been sung as a song of great sorrow and the hope for reunification. It pops up at sports events, including during the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney or as part of South Korea’s World Cup win in 2002\. With BTS’ latest chapter, it is being evoked for a modern purpose: to signify Bangtan Sonyeondan’s Korean identity in an era of pop culture globalization. Korean identity has always been integral to BTS’ music-making. Though casual listeners know the group for their English-language crowd pleasers “Dynamite” and “Butter,” much of BTS’ extensive discography is in Korean, and situates the group’s perspective firmly in their cultural background. For 2018 track “IDOL,” the group incorporated traditional Korean percussion into an EDM banger reclaiming BTS’ musical identity as both idols and artists. In _Arirang_, the traditional folk song is mostly used as a thematic tether rather than a literal musical inspiration, but BTS gives a sample of the song a prominent place in their 14-track return. Two minutes into the electronic rhythms of album-opener “Body to Body,” BTS steps back to allow for “Arirang”’s chorus to rise. The drums turn acoustic, and the voices of women singing in the emotionally evocative timbre of traditional Korean music, fill the track. The first half in particular is rooted in the hip-hop music that inspired BTS’s initial formation and sound. _Arirang_ was mostly written in Los Angeles, where the seven members stayed for two months of songwriting sessions in the summerof 2025, shortly following the final members’ military discharges. The city has long played a notable role in the BTS members’ trajectories as artists. The group traveled to L.A. in 2014 to film their variety show _American Hustle Life_. Under the tutelage of West Coast rappers Coolio, Tony Jones, and Warren G., the members learned more about the Black culture at the heart of hip-hop. They recorded “Danger,” which would be the lead single off of 2014 debut studio album _Dark & Wild_, in a makeshift studio in an LA garage, and held their first U.S. show at West Hollywood’s The Troubadour. In 2025, BTS’ welcome to LA looked much different. Now one of the [most powerful musical artists](https://time.com/5912998/bts-army/) on the planet, BTS met with hundreds of producers and songwriters to find the beats and melodies that would make _Arirang_, eventually working with Western producers like Diplo, Mike WiLL Made-it, El Guincho, Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, Ryan Tedder, and Teezo Touchdown, as well as Big Hit producers Pdogg and GHSTLOOP, to shape _Arirang_. The result is an album that is a hybrid of BTS’ Korean identity and L.A.’s industry town sensibilities. “SWIM,” BTS’ most laidback lead single ever, is also _Arirang_ at its most musically muted. The English-language track washes over listeners in waves of lo-fi synth as it champions moving forward at one’s own pace. It’s an offer of comfort to listeners overwhelmed by the demands of the modern world and a statement of intent from a BTS faced with unattainable expectations. When BTS released their debut track, “No More Dream,” an angsty, gangsta rap-inspired track about the unbearable social pressures pressing down young people, they were speaking to their Korean contemporaries. Now, they are sometimes expected to speak for an entire fandom, an entire generation, an entire country. In “they don’t know ‘bout us,” BTS pushes back against a mythmaking narrative that paints the members as inherently extraordinary. “‘They’re special among Asians’/’Heroic beings, too hard to break’/Uh, we can’t relate/We’re just seven people.” The song, and the album as a whole is a reclaiming of BTS’ musical identity and an assertion that messy, mortal change is inevitable: “Ah, you said we changed?/We feel the same.” Still, the tension between what BTS is and what others might expect them to be remains, and _Arirang_ shines a spotlight on it in its best moments. Torn between a desire to be accessible to global audiences and a deeply held value of authenticity, BTS contemplates the same questions their critics try to catch them out on. “I'm the only one who speaks English, but that is how we kill,” RM, the group’s English-speaking leader, raps in “Aliens,” a song that works in references to traditional jungmori rhythm, the Asian custom of taking shoes off inside someone’s home, and Korean independence fighter Kim Gu as it reflects on BTS’ global impact. “Two sides of a coin, and they both ain't true,” Jimin sings in “Normal,” which is part of _Arirang_’s more openly sentimental, musically eclectic second half. The pop-rock track builds upon the album’s theme of a complex, sometimes contradictory identity, and the feelings that can go along with an exploration of it—especially in the public eye. “Show me hate, show me love, make me bulletproof,” Jimin sings earlier in the same song, referencing the “Bulletproof Boy Scouts” meaning behind BTS’ Korean name. Pop music is not a particularly easy industry to age in, which is another way of saying it is not a particularly easy industry to change in. Our global pop culture worships youthfulness as a life peak, and “boy bands” in particular have always been tied to a kind of ephemeral, coming-of-age chaos that is difficult to sustain past a certain life phase. _Arirang_’s greatest strength is the sincerity with which it walks the line between qualities of BTS’ music and expression that have always been there and a messy embrace of inevitable change.
