The suspension, which was mediated by Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Qatar, will begin at midnight on Wednesday and is set to last until midnight on Monday local time, according to Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar. It is the first cessation of hostilities between the two countries since Pakistan [declared “open war” with Afghanistan](https://time.com/7381546/pakistan-afghanistan-taliban-war-strikes-attacks-border-clash-terrorism-explainer/) amid renewed clashes in February. “Pakistan offers this gesture in good faith and in keeping with the Islamic norms,” Tarar said in a [statement](https://x.com/TararAttaullah/status/2034269962894823924) on social media. It does not yet appear likely that the temporary pause will lead to a more lasting cease-fire. Tarar cautioned that “in case of any cross-border attack, drone attack or any terrorist incident inside Pakistan,” Pakistan’s operations “shall immediately resume with renewed intensity.” Afghan government spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid said in a [statement](https://x.com/Zabehulah%5FM33/status/2034296141127598480) on social media that “protecting Afghanistan’s national security and sovereignty and preserving the lives of the Afghan people are among \[the government’s\] national and legitimate duties, and in the event of any threat, it will courageously respond to any aggression.” Mujahid did not specify a timeframe for the pause. The pause was announced shortly after Afghanistan’s Taliban government held a mass funeral in Kabul for some of the 400 people killed in a strike on a drug treatment hospital on Monday. Pakistan has [denied](https://x.com/TararAttaullah/status/2033861120067572206) hitting or targeting the hospital and said it was targeting military and terrorist infrastructure, but the strike has drawn international condemnation. It also comes after the [U.S. and Israel launched a war against Iran](https://time.com/7382631/iran-israel-us-war-explainer-trump-middle-east/), which has thrown the Middle East into chaos. Analysts have warned that Pakistan faces the possibility of a dual shock if it does not de-escalate its war with Afghanistan. At least 47 civilians were killed in Afghanistan, according to a [U.N. report](https://unama.unmissions.org/sites/default/files/2026-02/ENGLISH%20-%20UNAMA%20HRS%20paper%20on%20cross-border%20civilian%20casualties%5F2.pdf), as well as dozens of soldiers on either side, although reported casualty counts differ. Both sides agreed to a cease-fire, mediated by Qatar and Turkey, around Oct. 19, ending weeks of the most intense fighting since the Taliban retook control of Afghanistan in 2021. That cease-fire was shattered around three weeks ago when Pakistan carried out airstrikes on what it said was terrorist infrastructure in Afghanistan, prompting retaliatory cross-border attacks from Afghanistan. Pakistan has accused Afghanistan of hosting and providing support to militant groups that have carried out attacks inside Pakistan. Prior to the February airstrikes, Pakistan experienced a string of suicide bombings and other deadly terrorist attacks that it [said](https://x.com/MoIB%5FOfficial/status/2025316690855354804) were perpetrated by militants at the “behest of their Afghanistan-based leadership and handlers.” Kabul has denied providing cover to or supporting the Pakistani Taliban, which is separate but allied with the Afghan Taliban, and other militant groups. Pakistan and Afghanistan have clashed several times since. Pakistan has continued carrying out airstrikes on Kabul and other areas of Afghanistan. Over the past week, Pakistan [intercepted](https://www.arabnews.pk/node/2636345/pakistan) drones from Afghanistan, the debris of which injured at least four people in multiple cities, according to Pakistan’s military. Before Monday’s strike on the hospital, Pakistan claimed it had killed more than 450 Taliban soldiers and militants, while the Afghan government claimed it had killed dozens of Pakistani soldiers. Both sides have disputed each other’s casualty figures. The United Nations human rights office [OHCHR](https://www.ohchr.org/en/press-briefing-notes/2026/03/afghanistan-deadly-blast-kills-many-rehab-center-kabul) said 289 Afghan civilians, including 104 children and 59 women, have been killed or injured since fighting began in late February, before casualties of Monday’s strike were reported. Tens of thousands of people in Afghanistan have also been displaced, as have many people in Pakistan. ## Strike on Kabul hospital draws international scrutiny A strike hit the Omid Addiction Treatment Hospital at around 9 p.m. on Monday, killing at least 408 people and wounding 265 others, according to Afghan officials. It’s the deadliest attack since renewed clashes in February. Afghanistan has blamed the strike on Pakistan, while Pakistani officials have denied the charge and [accused](https://x.com/TararAttaullah/status/2034317622943285738?s=20) Afghanistan of spreading propaganda. Tarar has repeatedly insisted that Pakistan is only targeting terrorist and military infrastructure, including in its strikes on Kabul and eastern Afghanistan on Monday. “Because of the targeting choice and the scale of casualties, this strike constitutes the most escalatory moment of the conflict,” Michael Kugelman, a senior fellow at the Washington-based think tank the Atlantic Council, told [Bloomberg](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-03-18/pakistan-s-deadly-strikes-in-kabul-prompt-calls-for-ceasefire). “It brings the two sides perilously close to the outbreak of all-out war.” Tarar told the [Associated Press](https://apnews.com/article/afghanistan-pakistan-hospital-drug-rehabilitation-airstrike-funeral-c457ea4cffb45299ab9967543610b4fe) that Pakistan has “gone after the Afghan Taliban regime, their military setups, their terrorist infrastructure, and all the setups which are supporting or promoting terrorists” and that its strikes “have been very precise and these strikes were carried out in an ammunition depot in Kabul. In the aftermath of which, we saw fumes and flames in the atmosphere in Kabul.” He said any loss of life from the strikes occurred “because there was ammunition, there were technical equipment, there were arms there in that depot.” Mujahid accused Pakistan on Monday of “targeting hospitals and civilian sites to perpetrate horrors,” killing “innocent civilians and addicts.” The hospital hosts around 2,000 beds and is located in eastern Kabul, near former NATO military base Camp Phoenix, as well as near the city’s international airport. The rehabilitation facility was expanded a year ago as part of the Afghan government’s efforts to combat widespread drug addiction in the country. Afghanistan, home to large tracts of poppy fields, has historically been the world’s largest source of heroin, but production levels have fallen dramatically since the Taliban government implemented a strict ban on poppy cultivation in 2022. Local media [reported](https://theafghantimes.com/afghanistan/2026/03/16/death-toll-rises-to-400-after-pakistani-airstrike-on-kabul-addiction-hospital-taliban-say/) a fire at the hospital in the aftermath of the strike, as rescue teams pulled bodies out of the burning building. The [New York Times](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/17/world/asia/afghanistan-pakistan-kabul-hospital.html) reported that at least 75 bodies were transported in ambulances overnight on Monday and Tuesday morning. On Wednesday, Afghan authorities held a mass funeral for some of the victims whose remains could not be identified, according to the AP, citing Health Ministry spokesperson Sharafat Zaman. Ambulances [unloaded 50 wooden caskets](https://www.barrons.com/news/mass-burials-expected-for-victims-of-kabul-drug-rehab-centre-strike-47138582), some containing the remains of more than one person, outside a cemetery in Kabul. ## Calls for peace The deadly strike in Kabul reignited international calls for a cease-fire. Beijing, which has friendly ties with Islamabad, called on both sides to “remain calm and exercise restraint, engage face to face as soon as possible, and resolve differences and disputes through dialogue,” the country’s foreign ministry spokesperson said. The European Union also [urged a cease-fire](https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/mex%5F26%5F640#:~:text=%E2%80%9CThe%20strike%20on%20a%20medical,Law%2C%20including%20the%20Geneva%20Conventions.), calling the attack “another deadly escalation in a conflict that needs to end as soon as possible.” World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus [called](https://news.un.org/en/story/2026/03/1167148) on both sides to “de-escalate and prioritise peace and health.” He noted that at least six health facilities in Afghanistan have reported being impacted since the clashes began in late February. “Under international humanitarian law, civilians and civilian objects are strictly protected,” Thameen Al-Kheetan, a spokesperson for OHCHR, said. U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called for an immediate cease-fire and for all parties to guarantee humanitarian aid. The U.N. welcomed the announcement of the temporary pause. Spokesperson Farhan Haq [said](https://press.un.org/en/2026/db260318.doc.htm) at a news conference, “We hope that the suspension during Eid will be extended.” It remains to be seen whether the temporary pause can pave the way for a more lasting cease-fire. Prior to the pause, Kabul had [vowed](https://en.iz.ru/en/2060752/2026-03-17/afghanistan-has-promised-crushing-response-pakistan-attack-hospital-kabul) to deliver a “crushing response,” according to Afghanistan’s TOLOnews. Pakistan also ruled out talks with Afghanistan, dismissing Kabul’s previous calls for dialog to end the fighting. “There won’t be any talks,” Mosharraf Zaidi, a spokesperson for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, [told](https://x.com/mosharrafzaidi/status/2029565909803864331) state-run Pakistan Television last week. “Terrorism from Afghanistan has to end.” Other Pakistani officials have also signaled that Pakistan will not negotiate.
