These are just a few of the questions we had heading into the 2026 Academy Awards, which began airing on ABC at 7 p.m. ET sharp on Sunday. The night opened with an energetic montage and well-received monologue from O’Brien that we’ll dive into more below—but it seems safe to say he could be back for a third round of hosting next year. The ceremony then kicked into high gear with one of the most anticipated awards of the night, Best Supporting Actress. After her surprise win at the Actor Awards, Amy Madigan ultimately claimed the coveted statuette for her mesmerizingly menacing performance in _Weapons_. After (literally) racing through scenes from all the Best Picture nominees, the kids from _Weapons_ chased O’Brien right into the Dolby Theatre–although they apparently decided to let him continue his hosting duties rather than tearing him to pieces. Conan then launched into his monologue, poking fun at Chalamet for his controversial [ballet/opera comments](https://time.com/7383265/timothee-chalamet-ballet-opera/), Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos for attending a show in an actual theater, and applauding _If I Had Legs I’d Kick You_ costar and Best Actress nominee Rose Byrne for maintaining her composure while acting opposite someone she had such a huge crush on. ## _Weapons’_ Amy Madigan wins 40 years after her last nomination  Amy Madigan accepts her Best Actress in a Supporting Role for 'Weapons.' She was last nominated in 1985 for her performance in _Twice in a Lifetime_. After the _Marty Supreme_ actor made some ill-received comments about how “no one cares” about ballet or opera anymore, the Oscars centered, of all things, ballet in its show. During a performance of _Sinners’_ Oscar-nominated original song, “I Lied to You,” dozens of artists performing different dances from different eras stormed the stage to recreate the mystical musical scene in the movie. The final dancer to take center stage: Misty Copeland, the most famous living ballerina. Earlier in the week, the first Black female principal dancer for the American Ballet Theater [responded](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=424w9fJRgYk) to Chalamet’s comments during a CNN and _Variety_ event, saying he “wouldn't be an actor and have the opportunities he has as a movie star" if it were not for ballet or opera. On Oscar night, she was received with a standing ovation. ## Anna Wintour delivers a very meta cameo  Anna Wintour and Anne Hathaway at the 98th Annual Oscars, preparing to announce the nominees for Costume Design and Makeup and Hairstyling. In the original film, Hathaway and Emily Blunt play assistants to an exacting Meryl Streep, playing a heavily fictionalized version of Wintour. At the Oscars, Wintour took the stage initially without her signature sunglasses. Hathaway nervously asked her to assess her outfit, and Wintour ruthlessly put on her sunglasses, leaned into the camera, and said, “And the nominees are” without even acknowledging the Oscar winner’s query. When they presented the next category, Hathaway handed things off to Wintour who said, “Thank you, Emily,” pretending to mix up Hathaway with her co-star in the film, Emily Blunt. ## We witness the first tie in over a decade For just the seventh time in Academy Awards history, there was a tie! When Kumail Nanjiani announced the results of the Best Live Action Short Film category, he had to make it clear there were actually two winners: _The Singers_ and _Two People Exchanging Saliva_. While Best Picture is decided by ranked choice voting to ensure only one film can win, some other famous Oscars ties include Fredric March (_Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde_) and Wallace Beery (_The Champ_) for Best Actor in 1932, Katharine Hepburn (_The Lion in Winter_) and Barbra Streisand (_Funny Girl_) for Best Actress in 1969, and, most recently, _Skyfall_ and _Zero Dark Thirty_ for Best Sound Editing in 2013. ## One of the longest, most star-studded In Memoriams in recent memory  Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, Jerry O'Connell, Wil Wheaton, Fred Savage, Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, Carol Kane, Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan, Kiefer Sutherland, Demi Moore, Kevin Pollak, Kathy Bates, Annette Bening, John Cusack and Daphne Zuniga during a tribute to Ron Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. The _in memoriam_ at the Oscars lasted nearly 15 minutes, honoring dozens of those the community had lost, including Rob Reiner, Catherine O’Hara, Diane Keaton, Robert Redford, Val Kilmer, and Robert Duvall. The montage segment began with _When Harry Met Sally_ star Billy Crystal speaking about the director of that film and his longtime friend, Rob Reiner, and went on to feature an array of actors who starred in Reiner’s films including Meg Ryan (_When Harry Met Sally_), Demi Moore (_A Few Good Men_), Kathy Bates (_Misery_), and Mandy Patinkin (_Princess Bride_). Next came a heartfelt tribute by Rachel McAdams to Catherine O’Hara and her _The Family Stone_ co-star Diane Keaton. Finally, Barbra Streisand took the stage to share memories about her _The Way We Were_ costar Robert Redford and serenade the audience with the title song from the 1973 film. ## _Bridesmaids_ reunion doesn't quite land the plane  Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, reunite 15 years after the release of 'Bridesmaids' Kevin Winter—Getty Images _Bridesmaids_ fans were looking forward to the cast gathering together at the Academy Awards 15 years after the iconic movie debuted. But the show strangely did not fully capitalize on its A-list stars. Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne, Maya Rudolph, and Ellie Kemper, who presented the Oscars for Best Score and Best Sound, did a bit in which they read rude notes from the audience about how they were “aging well.” But they didn’t reference the movie itself. Nor did they really talk about Score or Sound, the two awards they were giving out. Luckily, both needed little introduction. Ludwig Göransson, who had previously won two Oscars for scoring _Black Panther_ and _Oppenheimer_, picked up his third. (And will likely be back with _The Odyssey_ next year.) And in a long tradition of the loudest movie winning Best Sound, the engine-revving-filled _F1_ took home the trophy. ## Autumn Durald Arkapaw makes history as first woman to win Best Cinematography  Autumn Durald Arkapaw accepts the award for Best Cinematography for 'Sinners' Patrick T. Fallon—AFP via Getty Images Durald Arkapaw made history on Sunday night when she took home the award for best cinematography for _Sinners_. Only three women have ever been nominated. It was a tight race, but Durald Arkapaw wrested a win over Michael Bauman, who had won the American Society of Cinematographers’ top prize for _One Battle After Another_ earlier in awards season. Notably, she was also the first female cinematographer to shoot on IMAX 65mm and Ultra Panavision, in her work _Sinners_, which involves wielding two gigantic and loud cameras. The win—and the standing ovation that accompanied it—suggested that _Sinners_ was gaining momentum in the race against _One Battle_ for top prizes that will come later in the night, like Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Film. The camera briefly showed _Sinners_ director Ryan Coogler, whom Durald Arkapaw honored in her speech, carrying her son down the aisle to watch his mom accept the award. ## _KPop Demon Hunters_ brings down the house—and makes history  Rei Ami, EJAE and Audrey Nuna perform 'Golden' just before the song won the Oscar for Original Song. Robert Gauthier—Los Angeles Times via Getty Images Performing a spirited rendition of the smash-hit anthem “Golden” from global phenomenon _KPop Demon Hunters_, fictional girl group HUNTR/X (consisting of very real artists Ejae, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami) sang their hearts out as the Oscars audience enthusiastically flashed light-up bracelets. In addition to “Golden” winning for Best Original Song soon after the performance—the first K-pop song to ever do so—the Netflix film also took home the Academy Award for best animated feature earlier in the evening, making co-director and writer Maggie Kang and producer Michelle Wong the first people of South Korean descent to ever win in the category. ## Michael B. Jordan wins his first Oscar in a tight race  Michael B. Jordan for _Sinners._ Jordan likely clinched the trophy with a moving speech at the Actors Awards earlier this month, during which he thanked his mother for driving him from New Jersey to auditions in New York when they didn’t even have the money to pass through the Holland Tunnel. “God is good,” the actor declared when he took the stage Sunday night to accept his Oscar. He went on to thank all the actors who paved the way for his win, including Denzel Washington, whom he has repeatedly said in interviews has inspired his career choices. Jordan’s win is particularly impressive considering that young actors rarely win this award. Jordan broke out early in prestige television shows like _The Wire_ and _Friday Night Lights_, but it was Ryan Coogler who set him on his movie-star trajectory when he cast him as the lead in his Sundance film _Fruitvale Station_. The two have gone on to collaborate on every single one of Coogler’s films: _Creed_, _Black Panther, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever_, and now _Sinners_. ## Jessie Buckley wins her first Oscar in a less tight race  Jessie Buckley accepts the award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for 'Hamnet' Patrick T. Fallon—AFP via Getty Images Following a historic awards season sweep, Jessie Buckley was the overwhelming frontrunner to win Best Actress heading into the night. And win she did, picking up her first Oscar for her moving performance as Agnes Shakespeare in Chloé Zhao’s period drama _Hamnet_. As the first Irish actress to take home the award in that category, Buckley noted the ceremony happened to fall on Mother’s Day in the U.K. and dedicated her win to “the beautiful chaos of a mother’s heart.” ## _One Battle After Another_ emerges victorious  Paul Thomas Anderson hugs Chase Infiniti next to Leonardo DiCaprio as they accept the award for Best Picture. Although _Sinners_ picked up several major awards throughout the evening, including Best Original Screenplay for Ryan Coogler, Best Cinematography for Autumn Durald Arkapaw, and Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, Paul Thomas Anderson’s win for Best Director turned out to be the biggest indicator of what was to come: _OBAA_ taking home the top honor of the night, in addition to five other trophies. "There is no best," Anderson said while accepting the award. "There is just what the mood might be that day.
