Gavin Newsom [said](https://youtu.be/pnYvHei70i8?t=2377) at a news conference Wednesday. The Democratic governor was referring to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s warning to police departments in his state about Iran having “aspired” to a “surprise attack” against targets in California to retaliate against U.S. attacks. ABC News [first reported](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/TBQWX3KGZAKH) on the FBI alert. The alert, distributed in late February just as U.S. and Israel [jointly launched strikes against Tehran](https://time.com/7382631/iran-israel-us-war-explainer-trump-middle-east/), read: “We recently acquired information that as of early February 2026, Iran allegedly aspired to conduct a surprise attack using unmanned aerial vehicles from an unidentified vessel off the coast of the United State Homeland, specifically against unspecified targets in California, in the event that the US conducted strikes against Iran.” The memo, however, added that the FBI had no information on the timing, method, target, or perpetrators of the alleged attack. The FBI did not immediately respond to TIME’s request for comment. The White House referred TIME to President Donald Trump’s [remarks](https://x.com/RapidResponse47/status/2031895027467628688?s=20) at Joint Base Andrews Wednesday night: “It’s being investigated,” Trump said, “But you have a lot of things happening. And all we could do is take them as they come.” Newsom said the FBI warning was not a surprise, but that he has many questions about what could come next in the Iran war. The California governor added that he has yet to talk to Trump. “I wish the President would talk to the American people about what this is all about,” he said. “What's the endgame here?” Other state officials similarly downplayed the warning. San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie [said in a video statement on social media](https://x.com/DanielLurie/status/2031843904279232902) that he was “aware” of the reports, but had received assurances from state and federal partners about the lack of “imminent threats” in the city. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass [told Reuters](https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/trump-says-he-is-not-worried-about-iran-backed-attacks-us-soil-2026-03-11/) that her office and the Los Angeles Police Department were "coordinating closely with state and federal partners to keep Angelenos safe” and that “at this time, there is no specific or credible threat to Los ⁠Angeles." The Los Angeles County’s Sheriff’s Department [issued a statement](https://www.facebook.com/LosAngelesCountySheriffsDepartment/photos/in-light-of-current-global-events-the-department-remains-at-an-elevated-level-of/1364846202350159/) Wednesday night, saying that “in light of current global events,” they are at “an elevated level of readiness” and are “working closely with our federal and local law enforcement partners to share intelligence and monitor the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and assess any potential impacts in our communities.” The department added that “out of an abundance of caution, and in recognition of current religious observances,” they have stepped up patrols around places of worship, cultural institutions, and key places in the county. ## Could Iran actually stage the attack? In response to the U.S.-Israel joint strikes on Feb. 28, Iran has fired missiles and drones at Israel and neighboring Gulf states such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Bahrain. Iran has deployed an arsenal of Shahed drones since the war broke out. Iran’s Shahed drones were designed by the Shahed Aviation Industries Research Center, an Iranian company that works with the country’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, according to [a U.S. government report](https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/jy1104). These drones, which carry up to 50 kg of explosives, are considerably cheaper than ballistic missiles–ranging between $20,000 and $50,000 per drone–and can be particularly damaging when used in large swarms. (The U.S. Central Command recently [said](https://x.com/CENTCOM/status/2027828397087334407) that it had launched its own low-cost drones–modeled on the Iranian Shaheds–in combat against Iran.) Speaking to the[_New York Times_](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/04/business/iran-shahed-drones-missiles-us-war.html), Stacie Pettyjohn, senior fellow and director of the defense program at the D.C.-based think tank Center for a New American Security, said the Shahed-136, a long-range version, can travel roughly 1,200 mi., allowing it to reach targets across the Middle East. That range puts the drones at a considerable distance away from the West Coast. Iranian ships could bring these drones nearer, but to do so, they’d first need to travel past the U.S.’s many military bases across the world. ABC News reported that intelligence officials were worried about the weapons being pre-positioned—either on land or sea.
