Mar 11, 2026 11:00 PM UTC I recently returned from my first official overseas trip as U.S. Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism. After visiting Switzerland and London, I joined Secretary Marco Rubio in Germany at the Munich Security Conference to meet with foreign ministers and other senior leaders from Bahrain, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and other governments with the clear goal of lowering the levels of hate globally. An international security conference may seem like an unlikely venue for a rabbi to mark Shabbat. But as unchecked antisemitism increasingly fuels violence and terror around the world, it is time to acknowledge antisemitism for what it really is: a threat to national security and international stability. This is true in the United States and abroad. In the past few months, a father and son murdered 15 people and injured dozens more at [Bondi Beach](https://time.com/7340830/bondi-beach-attack-antisemitism-australia/) in Sydney, Australia. On Jan. 10, a 19-year-old man poisoned with antisemitic beliefs set fire to [Beth Israel synagogue](https://time.com/7378086/mississippi-synagogue-arson-fire/) in Jackson, Mississippi—the oldest synagogue in the state. And since [Purim](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/03/world/canada/toronto-synagogue-shots-fired.html), three synagogues have been attacked in the Toronto area. We must remain vigilant, and we must prosecute those who commit hate-motivated crimes of violence against Jews to the fullest extent of the law. This is why President Donald Trump has [ordered](https://www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2025/01/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-takes-forceful-and-unprecedented-steps-to-combat-anti-semitism/) the Attorney General to “aggressively prosecute terroristic threats, arson, vandalism, and violence against American Jews.” And we must ensure that our educational institutions implement policies to protect Jewish students. From implementing rigorous visa vetting to holding universities accountable, these are policies we can embrace today to address antisemitism head-on, using every available and appropriate legal tool to ensure that Jewish communities—and all Americans—are safer and more secure. Here’s why education is as important as ever. Antisemitism proliferates from an ever-multiplying list of sources: voices from all sides of the political spectrum spew antisemitic rhetoric; foreign terrorist organizations espouse violent antisemitic ideologies; and online radicalization increasingly incites real-world antisemitic attacks against Jewish individuals and institutions globally. To combat these sources, we must show the world what true Jewish community means—and what it means to be in community with Jews. This is why we hosted a Shabbat dinner at the State Department last month: to educate more than 80 ambassadors, U.S. officials, and Jewish community leaders about the vibrancy of Jewish life and to celebrate peace and harmony for Jews, Muslims, Christians, and people of all faiths. This kind of community building and education is crucial because hate is ultimately born out of ignorance. Too often, unhappy people ignorantly blame a minority group for their problems. We must stand up and declare once and for all that hate of any kind is not acceptable. We must fight for religious freedom for people of all faiths. And we must show the world the beauty and strength of standing united. America will not let this scourge go unchallenged. Together, by treating one another with respect, we will build a safer world for us all.
