U.K. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood gave her consent to the police banning the event alongside any associated counter-protest marches. The ban is set to come into effect Wednesday at 4 p.m. local time and last for a month. “I am satisfied doing so is necessary to prevent serious public disorder, due to the scale of the protest and multiple counter-protests, in the context of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East,” [said](https://x.com/ShabanaMahmood/status/2031644666651619584) Mahmood, referencing the ongoing Iran war which has engulfed countries around the world. “Should a stationary demonstration proceed, the police will be able to apply strict conditions,” Mahmood confirmed, adding that she expects to see the full force of the law applied to “anyone spreading hatred and division instead of exercising their right to peaceful protest.” According to the Metropolitan Police, the threshold to ban a protest is “high” and it hasn’t been done since 2012.
