How could one person represent an entire year? Do we lean into the light, reach into the darkness, or land somewhere in between? This year’s choice was the most clear-cut in memory. Whether the battle for Ukraine fills one with hope or with fear, [Volodymyr Zelensky galvanized the world](https://time.com/person-of-the-year-2022-volodymyr-zelensky/) in a way we haven’t seen in decades. In the weeks after Russian bombs began falling on Feb. 24, his decision not to flee Kyiv but [to stay and rally support](https://time.com/6154139/volodymyr-zelensky-ukraine-profile-russia/) was fateful. From his first 40-second Instagram post on Feb. 25—showing that his Cabinet and civil society were intact and in place—to daily [speeches delivered remotely](https://time.com/6185347/volodymyr-zelensky-time100-gala/) to the likes of houses of Parliament, the World Bank, and the Grammy Awards, [Ukraine’s President was everywhere](https://time.com/6171277/volodymyr-zelensky-interview-ukraine-war/). His information offensive shifted the geopolitical weather system, setting off a wave of action that swept the globe. In a world that had come to be defined by its divisiveness, there was a [coming together around this cause](https://time.com/6155670/foreign-fighters-ukraine-europe/), around this country that some outside it might not be able to find on a map. At the U.N., [141 countries condemned the invasion](https://time.com/6152798/russia-rules-of-war-crimes-ukraine/); only North Korea, Syria, Eritrea, and Belarus—dictatorships all—voted with Moscow. Major [companies pulled out of Russia](https://time.com/6154429/companies-withdrawing-from-russia-ukraine/) en masse, erasing billions in revenues. Financial, material, [humanitarian, and military support came pouring in](https://time.com/6163028/ukraine-aid-mission/). Strangers [took in refugees](https://time.com/6237361/uk-homes-for-ukraine-refugees-homelessness/); restaurateurs fed the hungry; doctors flew in to [help the wounded](https://time.com/6162452/syrian-doctors-are-teaching-ukrainians-chemical-attacks/). Ukraine’s flag unfurled across social media; its colors, blue and yellow, lit up landmarks from Tokyo to Sandusky, Ohio. Many fought behind the scenes, like Ievgen Klopotenko, one of Ukraine’s most famous chefs, known for his borsch, who provided over a thousand free meals a day to refugees in Lviv in the first weeks after the invasion. “If you have the opportunity to eat borsch, it means that you are alive,” he says. [Chef José Andrés](https://time.com/collection/apart-not-alone/5809169/jose-andres-coronavirus-food/) brought his World Central Kitchen, serving more than 180 million free meals. Dr. David Nott, a Welsh surgeon, has traveled multiple times to Ukraine to train local doctors in how to treat war wounds. Julia Payevska, a medic, treated wounded civilians, day and night, in besieged Mariupol, as well as a wounded enemy soldier—footage of which helped her get released after three months of imprisonment by Russian troops. All the while, journalists risked their lives to tell these stories. “The challenge is to find a way to talk about it so that the world continues to care,” says [Olga Rudenko](https://time.com/6174883/olga-rudenko-kyiv-independent/), the editor of the Kyiv Independent. --- Zelensky has been laser-focused on keeping the world’s eyes on Ukraine. The former entertainer understood innately that attention is the planet’s most valuable currency and all but cornered the global market. He did this through meticulous image-building and repetition in his message. He was blunt, sometimes sarcastic, and always directly to the point: we must save Ukraine to save democracy. In an alternate reality where someone else had been leading Ukraine, there might or might not be a Russian flag flying over the parliament building in Kyiv. There would almost certainly still be a McDonald’s near Moscow’s Red Square, that symbol of post-Cold War globalization. Zelensky’s command of the weapons of the digital age meant that business leaders and politicians everywhere were forced to take notice and take a stand, whether they liked it or not. His decision to downplay the threat of invasion, including failing to share with his fellow citizens U.S. intelligence that it was imminent, infuriated many in his country. The cavalcade of visiting celebrities and fashion magazine shoots are calculated to keep attention on the crisis but can at times seem out-of-touch amid the killing. Others question whether he is committed enough to liberating his country from Vladimir Putin’s terror without also triggering World War III. Zelensky himself acknowledges it is too early to say whether his efforts will lead to success. “Later we will be judged,” he tells TIME’s Simon Shuster, in a two-hour conversation on the President’s railcar en route to Kyiv from a visit to newly liberated Kherson. (Perhaps no reporter has spent more time with Zelensky and his inner circle this year than Simon, a source of great insight for TIME’s readers.) I've experienced the war inside the presidential bubble to a large extent because of my previous relationships with with the president is team. I started reporting on presidents Wednesday before he was president. His career before. He went into politics in 2019, was as a comedian movie producer and actor. He made fun of the politicians that you ended up replacing. Virginia ever seen your dream, came to power, promising to be from outside the system. Not corrupted by the oligarchs. The wealthy and self-serving Elites, that's how he defines himself as one of the main reasons why his campaign was successful. And I think many people voted because they believed that the president that they saw in that TV show would be the president. This is when she would become Things are more complicated. What is a wartime leader? I think. President zelensky is surprised everybody consistently. What his advisers have told me since the beginning of the invasion is that he lets the general do the fighting and he focuses on what he is good at, which is communication, grabbing the attention of the world and not allowing the world to turn away to make sure that the West, the US Europeans, actively support Ukraine with weapons supplies, with financial aid, with political support. Also inspiring the public with speeches, story. He's always on line is always filming videos, posting videos and the way that he's been able to communicate, not only with his people, but the people around the world or we're watching this war is is unique to history. And I think that's been a very powerful tool friend when you get a minute. This was his decision to stay in key of throughout. The invasion has been so important because it was very hard morally politically personally, for anyone else in the structure of the state, ministers, government officials to leave because of the bosses there. I think it was Wednesday to run away, it's it's fair to say that there would be a much higher chance that the state structure of Ukraine. Ukraine is a, the country is, is a state that the government would collapse. Show The Country Inn. And I think many around the world. That key is not scared. There's no reason to fear this. This Invader that that Ukraine can win that, it will win that inspired. A lot of people in inside the country and outside to stand up and help fight this war. Ukrainians generally hold, they're worried about the future inside people say, just give it a couple more months and we'll have our Victory. They certainly expressed that belief all the time but it's it's a it's a scary time. This strategy that Russia is pursuing of bombing and freezing the country into submission is very scary Ukraine's Capital again I talked to you in Ukraine, aren't sure how they're going to get through that but if asked and do you think the victory is around the corner? They say yes. We're definitely going to win and and victory is coming. I think everybody up, right? I just don't believe it's a photographer or Soldier. Save me, I'm not afraid to try to fight because we fight for our phone. We don't have any choice. When I talked about the role in history with the landscape was on a train coming back from hair salon, he said it's too early to judge my role in history. I'm not done yet. I still need to finish this thing for the country and I think they wasn't really just the war. He meant, he wants to finish this kind of cycle of Oppression and subjugation that Russia has pursued for Generations. He doesn't want to, just have a temporary truce or an Armistice that allows Russia can rearm and retrench and cry. Again, really wants to break the cycle. So the Russians ever attack c-crane again. So that it remains a free independent and sovereign country. That's how he sees his role in history. And and what he wants to do, if not, just kind of set them to go, see a shins that leads to a cease-fire.
