If you’re looking for a nostalgia fix, the 1980s made up the golden age of computer games. Just about every genre’s represented in some form or another, with many of the early titles providing the foundations for entire franchises to follow in future decades.

## Lode Runner
Climbing ladders, digging holes; standard day at the office for most of us.
In the early '80s, Lode Runner was born as the pet project of University of Washington computer lab attendant Doug Smith. Smith coded the game during the boring, slow summer months, likely unaware that it'd become one of the most popular games of all time.
Aside from simple-yet-addictive gameplay and 150 built-in levels, Lode Runner extended its appeal indefinitely with the inclusion of a level editor.

## Castle Wolfenstein
Before Wolfenstein 3D set the first-person shooter genre ablaze, there was Castle Wolfenstein. It seems downright archaic nowadays but it's hard to forget how startling it was to hear one of the guards yelling "HALT!" before chasing you around as you blindly fired shots off in all directions.

## Paperboy
Ah yes, Paperboy. Otherwise known as the game that made me so mad I slammed my fist down on the keyboard, causing irreparable damage to the L key. That was a tough one to explain to my dad, but anyone who's played the game knows how frustrating it is to get through an entire level only to eat it on the first jump in the bonus area. Stupid bonus area.

## Budokan – The Martial Spirit
Budokan may have had some of the coolest graphics for an action/fighting game at the time of its release. Though the actual gameplay skirted towards overly repetitive at times, the surrounding visuals and backgrounds gave everything a peaceful, Zen-like feeling.

## King's Quest III – To Heir is Human
Oh yes I did skip over King's Quest I and II for this list. While both games were groundbreaking and set certain standards in their own right, it was King's Quest III that perfected the series' formula. Featuring time-based events (the evil wizard only leaves you alone for 25 minutes at a time), a much deeper storyline than the first two games, and ahead-of-its-time graphics, King's Quest III remains a classic to this day.

## California Games
If you played sports-themed computer games in the '80s, you found yourself in front of several Epyx titles. There were the Olympics-style Summer Games and Winter Games, along with the weird-but-fun World Games (caber toss, anyone?). The true masterpiece was California Games, though, with a handful of actual sports (half pipe, surfing, BMX racing) mixed in with gems like hacky sack, flying disc, and boardwalk roller skating.

## Ghostbusters
Ghostbusters leveraged a nice mix of action and RPG elements. You'd use the money from busting ghosts (careful not to cross the streams!) to upgrade your car and equipment until you finally took on classic characters from the movie like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and Zuul.

## Quest for Glory
Originally titled Hero's Quest but later renamed for legal reasons, the first game in Sierra's Quest for Glory franchise featured the unique ability to choose from one of three characters—Fighter, Magic User, or Thief. Each character would have a distinct path throughout the game with different challenges and puzzles to solve. Beat the game as a Fighter, then play it through again as a Thief or a Magic User.

## SimCity
The game that started it all, SimCity hit the scene in 1989 and would go on to form the foundation of a true gaming empire. SimCity's underlying code has since been released into the public domain under the "Micropolis" moniker, and countless Sim-inspired spinoffs have been released throughout the years. You name it, it's pretty much been Simmed.

## Prince of Persia
While the PC version didn't surface until 1990, the Apple II version of Prince of Persia slid into the market right at the end of 1989\. The animations, level design, and fighting mechanics were truly revolutionary and the game featured a great mix of fighting and problem solving.

## Police Quest
The first game in Sierra's Police Quest series departed from the tried-and-true formulas found in the fanciful King's Quest series and the spoof-filled Space Quest series.
Police Quest was part adventure game and part driving game, as you donned the persona of officer Sonny Bonds to patrol the streets of Lytton, California in search of a drug kingpin called The Death Angel. It was a serious, almost dark turn for Sierra but the formula worked.
