The Minecraft TNT mod has been around forever, and there's a reason why it's still one of the most popular: It offers special recipes that let you destroy huge swathes of the map, whether with firebombs (sets areas on fire), MinerTNT (wider blast radius, major block drop increase), napalm (create lava pools), or nukes -- so powerful they gouge massive holes in the landscape, and if detonated in sandy areas, can turn the landscape to glass.

This mod was built by someone named "Mighty Pork," which also describes what you'll be able to carry around (among other things) with it. Think of the mod's backpacks as "portable chests," since they are, allowing you to load up while you're collecting items (including pork) across your game world. There's even a "magic" backpack in the mix, which opens up a shared inventory system, and if you perish while toting one, all you need do is craft a new one to make the lost one's content magically reappear.

Want a water spout to tear through a nearby lake? Perhaps a twister that'll rip the nearby village apart, pulling up the ground and scattering blocks every which way? Millénaire is a mod for anyone looking to fill Minecraft's empty areas with villages based on "loose 11th-century Norman, North Indian and Mayans themes" (it's also for anyone dissatisfied with the game's lackluster native ones). Those villages come replete with adults as well as children capable of trading with you, raising crops, tweaking buildings, harvesting lumber, creating tools and generally expanding their living areas. Trade with them and they might reward you with special items, or even build you a house.

Simply put, this mod fills out the game's spartan bestiary by adding more creatures, some of them relatively exotic, including: jellyfish, stingray, mantaray, ostriches, ogres, wraiths, polar bears and werewolves (yes, werewolves). Several of the creatures are interactive, like "kitties," which can be tamed and fed, or "bunnies," which can be dropped like radar countermeasures to throw off attacking mobs.

Tired of Minecraft's static trees and forests that die and never replenish the way real ones would? Nature Overhaul remedies this by injecting trees and forests that grow dynamically, spreading (or dying) in plausible ways based on terrain type -- if trees spread into deserts, for instance, they'll fail. The mod also allows trees to seed new saplings and draws other plants like mushrooms, cacti and pumpkins into the circle of life, letting them spread to form "intricate ecosystems" that behave more like real-world ones would.

The idea behind Finite Liquid is to "fix" Minecraft's weird water physics (sans the oceans, which remain the same). With this mod, popping a hole in something containing water will cause it to drain out, and as the mod author notes, if you knock a hole between a lake and a cave, the cave will flood (and the lake will drain). What's more, the mod lets you drop pipes and actually pump liquid around, boil water (it can harm other creatures -- think mod traps), use grates to control liquid flow, sop it up with sponges and even build diving gear to explore underwater milieus.

SpaceToad's BuildCraft mod is basically a builder mashup aimed at armchair Minecraft engineers that want to fiddle with stuff like engines, pipes, lasers, wiring and logic gates, mining quarries or oil refineries. It essentially automates aspects of building, crafting and mining, taking some of the drudgery out of crafting advanced mechanical systems.
