The company will release Windows 8 to hardware makers (RTM, as they say) in the first week of August, and will let app developers start charging for their wares at the same time. In the past, new versions of Windows meant new laptops and desktops. But to go along with Windows 8’s touch-friendly interface, PC makers will be launching tablets, touchscreen laptops and hybrid devices as well. Here’s a rundown of the most interesting Windows 8 PCs we’ve heard about so far: **Microsoft Surface** Microsoft stunned the tech world last month with plans to build its own Windows 8 tablets, collectively known as “Surface.” We’re still waiting on all the details, but the design looks promising, with a built-in stand and a slim screen cover that doubles as a keyboard (as pictured above). The Windows RT version, which runs on the same type of processor as the iPad and other tablets, will launch around the same time as Windows 8 (so, presumably in October). A thicker and heavier version running Windows 8 Pro, with support for legacy Windows software, is coming 90 days later. No word on pricing yet.  It didn't take long after a damning inspector general report Wednesday for insiders to engage in that time-honored tradition of Washington politics: abandoning a sinking ship.rnrnAmid a high profile scandal over patient wait times at healthcare facilities, Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki looks to be a losing the battle to keep his job. Last week, President Barack Obama offered up a half-hearted defense of his Cabinet official as dozens of Republicans called for his head. A week later, on Thursday, a White House official said that Shinseki's position is now far more precarious. This week's report opened the floodgates for vulnerable Democrats looking to publicly break with an unpopular president in the doldrums of the second term. Now nine Senate Democrats and 19 House Democrats, along with a host of candidates across the country, are calling for Shinseki to go, numbers certain to grow in the coming days and weeks.rnrn"The inspector general's preliminary report makes it clear that the systemic problems at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs are so entrenched that they require new leadership to be fixed. Secretary Shinseki must step down," said Sen. Mark Udall Wednesday. "We need new leadership who will demand accountability to fix these problems and ensure the VA is providing Coloradans the services they've earned."rnrnThe Republican National Committee has already launched robo-calls against Democrats on the VA scandal, while the GOP congressional committees pile on vulnerable lawmakers.rnrnJust how long Shinseki stays now depends on how long congressional discipline holds and how big the White House's appetite for punishment is.rnrnThe report found that 1,700 veterans were found to be waiting for an appointment to the VA's Phoenix Health Care System without their information being included in an established electronic wait list. The inspector general said more work would be needed to determine the motivation of VA employees involved, as well as whether any veterans died as a result of delays.rnrnWednesday's report was only preliminary—and from a single hospital. The inspector general is probing 41 more facilities, while a senior Obama aide has been dispatched to the VA to launch an even broader review of how the agency treats the nation's retired service-members. Acer **Acer Iconia W510** Acer’s Iconia W510 is a Windows 8 tablet that connects to a rather interesting laptop dock. When the dock’s keyboard and trackpad are facing up, the W510 acts like a laptop, but flip it over, and the tablet swivels around into a presentation stand, with the screen facing out from the front. The W510 has a 10.1-inch, 1920-by-1080 resolution display, and will run an Intel processor with support for legacy Windows software. In the video, child models accessorize their underpants-jeans with sunglasses, straw hats and guitars. A girl baby adjusts a boy’s bow tie. Another sticks her chest out in one shot, and poses with legs apart and finger in her mouth in another. The 20 second spot is set to music that sounds like a rip-off of Madonna’s 1990 hit, "Vogue," and had this been shown to me without a timestamp, I’d have guessed the ad was produced around the same time, rather than now.rnrnThe little people seem to move more awkwardly than sexually, as little people tend to do, but that’s not how some Israeli parents feel about the ads.rnrnOne local father compared the baby models frozen on billboards to the come-hither pose of Israeli model, Bar Refaeli on a nearby advertisement, according to Vocativ. One Tweeter said the campaign belongs in the Red Light District, while another simply said “@huggies WTF?”rnrnMaybe selling something on the backs of provocatively dressed little people is new for Israel, but not for America where, since the 90s, we have become quite skilled at it. JonBenet Ramsey begat TLC’s Toddlers and Tiaras, which has long had the dolled up toddler crown on lock. That fixation produced the beloved Honey Boo Boo, whose unique brand and zany family earned her a show of her own.rnrnNot long ago, Vogue Paris was skewered for a spread that depicted little girls in kitten heels, makeup and sultry pouts. Dolls from Barbie to Bratz have been deemed too sexualized for child’s play, but they’re still available for purchase.rnCompared to all of the above, these poorly produced Huggies ads seem distasteful, yet tame. Asus **Asus Transformer AiO** If today’s tablets are too small for you, consider the Asus Transformer AiO, an all-in-one PC with a detachable 18.4-inch touch screen. When separated from the base, the gigantic tablet runs a standalone version of Android, but it can also use a remote desktop connection to access Windows 8 over a local network. Asus isn’t talking price or release date now, but my guess is “quite a lot” and “not for a while,” respectively. **HP “Slate 8”** HP has been quiet about its Windows 8 tablet plans so far, but [a report by Neowin](http://www.neowin.net/news/hp-is-working-on-x86-windows-8-tablet-rough-render-exposed) suggests a slick first effort. While most Intel-based Windows 8 tablets will be a bit chunky, the so-called Slate 8 will measure just 0.36 inches thick–a hair thinner than Apple’s new iPad–and weigh about 1.5 pounds, according to a leaked product rendering. And despite the slim figure, the Slate 8 will reportedly get between 8 and 10 hours of battery life. Now all we need is an official announcement to make this thing real.  iTunes iTunes Asus **Asus Tablet 600** One of the few Windows RT computers announced so far, the Asus Tablet 600 is essentially a Windows version of the company’s popular [Transformer Android tablet](http://techland.time.com/2011/11/09/asus-transformer-prime-is-the-first-quad-core-android-tablet/) series. The tablet has a 10.1-inch, 1366-by-768 resolution display and an Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor; it turns into a laptop with a keyboard and trackpad dock, an extra USB port and an extended battery. You know the drill: No price or release date just yet. (Asus is also working on Intel-based versions of the same concept. The Tablet 810 will have an Atom processor and an 11.6-inch display, and the Transformer Book will have Intel Core processors, discrete graphics and screen sizes of 11.6 inches, 13 inches and 14 inches.) **Nokia Mystery Tablet** Okay, so Nokia hasn’t announced a Windows 8 tablet, but there have been [rumors](http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20120312PD207.html), and former chairman Jorma Ollila has promised that the company is planning to launch a range of tablets.
