The cat was apparently out of the bag, as it were. Whatever happened, [it’s alive on the site again](http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AWH595M/ref=amb%5Flink%5F382772722%5Fimg?pf%5Frd%5Fm=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf%5Frd%5Fs=gateway-center-column&pf%5Frd%5Fr=1H3QKMBT5HR92NM5ZGFF&pf%5Frd%5Ft=101&pf%5Frd%5Fp=1611619942&tag=twitter0206f-20&pf%5Frd%5Fi=507846 "undefined") and our own Harry McCracken [got some hands-on time with the device](http://techland.time.com/2013/09/03/hands-on-amazons-new-kindle-paperwhite-is-a-really-really-refined-e-reader/ "undefined"). Amazon is boasting the “highest-ever contrast” for the Paperwhite’s display, an improved light and a 25% faster processor. It’ll be available on September 30 – roughly a year after the first version, [which Harry reviewed](http://techland.time.com/2012/09/30/amazon-kindle-paperwhite-review/ "undefined"), saying that “the screen makes it the best e-reader yet.” Amazon calls the new Paperwhite “the best device for reading, period.” That should surprise nobody, as Amazon has a vested interest in selling as many Amazon Paperwhites as it possibly can. Other new features include Goodreads integration, FreeTime parental controls that reward kids for reading, a vocabulary builder, new in-line footnotes, enhanced definitions and more.
