## Elle: Kate Upton, photographed by Carter Smith

!["Hello Sexy\!" The blonde bombshell certainly sells magazines, as exhibited by the 2012 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover that launched her as a household name. She has since then appeared on numerous magazine covers, including American Vogue in June; and Italian, British and Brazilian Vogues. In a curve-hugging red Lanvin dress with gold Lanvin jewelry, Upton's poised to do so again on this cover. At 650 pages, this is Elle's biggest fashion issue yet. It's nice to see the magazine reminiscing about its 1990s glory days by putting a model on the cover—we've seen too many actresses and pop stars over the last few years—but we would have preferred someone less obvious. But as much as we're bored by the pick, we understand her universal appeal—Aniston consistently performs well on newsstands: She had InStyle's highest-selling cover, at 793,588, in March 2012. Maybe it's the constant buzz about a "secret wedding" to Justin Theroux that keeps her relevant, maybe it's the baby rumors or maybe \(but not likely\) it's her new movie We're the Millers, but we think it's actually her girl-next-door relatability. ## WSJ Magazine: Drake Burnette, photographed by Josh Olins

![This relative newcomer to the magazine world, as an insert into the Wall Street Journal, has always been daring and artistic in its cover choices. Its September issue, which features newcomer Drake Burnette clad in stunning white lace Dolce & Gabbana, is no exception to the envelope-pushing. Inside, in a 17-page spread called "Lush Life," the model and actress is somber, clad in black and white, fur and lace. While we love the surprise of an unknown face on the cover of a September issue, this appearance is sure to propel her career: Burnette, who in her late 20s is considered by many a late-bloomer, made her modeling debut in the Céline pre-fall show in January 2013, and has made waves since then working on campaigns such as Topshop Fall/Winter 2013. ## InStyle: Drew Barrymore, photographed by Michelangelo Di Battista

![Honestly, InStyle's September cover model could have been anyone: Drew Barrymore looked so generic on it, if you squinted, you would be forgiven for thinking she was Amy Adams. And "Drew\!" was in such small print on the cover line—atypical to a star like her. Plus, while she's a lovely choice for a cover girl, this one just didn't do justice to her spunky, ahead-of-the-curve personality \(although she's toned it down in recent years: In the magazine, she talks about wanting a big family\). And now for the good news: The cover was classic and clean, and she looks put-together and ready to go back to work \(two things we all aspire to for fall\). We have to hand it to the accessories editors for dressing up that bland-ish outfit with Chanel earrings and snakeskin belt. And since it's a magazine about how to dress for every day, that approach works. At 716 pages, this is InStyle's biggest issue ever \(that's what they always say, isn't it? But in this case it's true\).](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt94fc437fa689cdcd/6998b688d32e9305f5cd5349/drew-barrymore-instyle-september-2013-cover_opt.jpg?branch=production&width=1080&quality=75&auto=webp&crop=16:9)

## Lucky: Blake Lively, photographed by Patrick Demarchelier

![Wrapped in a chic powder blue Gucci coat, Lively graces the cover of the biggest transformation of the year: Lucky, the shopping magazine that's being revamped under new editor-in-chief Eva Chen. Originally established as a populist, shopping-oriented glossy, Eva's first issue already has the look and feel of a high-fashion mag, which is no coincidence given the fact that Anna Wintour made Lucky one of her top priorities since assuming the role of artistic director at Condé Nast in March. You can see it on the cover: It's more sophisticated, less bright and commercial. With its recent decline in ad pages and newsstand sales, Lucky should see a boost with this changing of the guard. Plus, Lively was one of Elle's best-sellers last year, when she appeared on the cover of their March issue.](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt8620ff2a39fe51c6/6998b6891500fb9ae4aa483e/blake-lucky.jpg?branch=production&width=1080&quality=75&auto=webp&crop=16:9)
