In[_Knights of the Sea_](http://www.amazon.com/Knights-Sea-Story-Boxer-Enterprise/dp/0451235622), author David Hanna breathes life into the lone major sea battle witnessed from land in that conflict, which took place off Pemaquid Point, Maine. It pitted the British brig _HMS_ _Boxer_ against the _USS Enterprise_ in a pitched, broadside-blasting battle that lasted less than an hour. It marked the final round for this kind of maritime warfare, as well as telegraphing the U.S. Navy’s growing power and prowess. Hanna views much of the story through the _Boxer’s_ captain, Samuel Blyth, and William Burrows, at the helm of the _Enterprise_. _Battleland_ chatted with Hanna via email about the book: _Why did you write_ Knights of the Sea_?_ I wanted to know more about the two commanders who died as a result of the battle. How did they arrive at that moment in their lives? Why were they trying to kill each other? more _What was the most important thing you learned in your research and writing?_ That these men were like brothers, though they’d never met. Ukraine has launched a military operation to regain control of sites in the eastern region that had been overrun over by armed pro-Russian separatists in the past week, a mission that acting President Oleksandr Turchynov told parliament will be 'phased, responsible and balanced' Ukraine launched a military operation in the northern Donetsk region early on Tuesday, to regain control of sites that have been taken over by armed pro-Russian activists in various eastern towns and cities. According to Russian news agency Interfax, acting Ukrainian President Oleksandr Turchynov told parliament that the military was engaged in an “antiterrorist operation.” “It will be phased, responsible and balanced,” he said. “The purpose of the actions, I stress once again, is to protect the citizens of Ukraine.” The separatists have ignored several ultimatums to surrender from the Ukrainian government, which has to play a delicate game. Continued lack of military response could embolden pro-Russia groups, but an armed crackdown could prompt the invasion of Russian troops, which are gathered along the border in their tens of thousands. Speaking on Tuesday from Beijing, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov slammed an armed resolution to the crisis as "unacceptable." He added that claims of Russian involvement were “the biggest load of nonsense I have ever heard.” Ukraine has increasingly lost grip of the situation in the east, where thousands of officials have gone over to separatist forces. Defying the latest ultimatum on Monday, occupiers in Donetsk, who have declared an independent republic, vowed to take control of the rest of the province. In a statement on his Facebook page, Russian Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev said Ukraine was "on the brink of civil war." On Tuesday, a U.N. human-rights report was released on the crisis, citing the urgent need to counter "misinformation, propaganda and incitement to hatred" in order to avoid further escalation. Meanwhile, foreign ministers of the European Union decided Monday to freeze the assets of more Russian officials and prominent citizens, and extend visa bans. _Sum up the battle between the_ Boxer _and the_ Enterprise _for us._ The Enterprise had a slight advantage in both firepower and manpower, and Burrows (the American commander) used it to win a clear victory, though the outcome was in no way assured in advance, and the actual battle was quite fierce. _Why was it important?_ Just weeks before, James Lawrence and the Chesapeake had lost a bloody single-ship engagement with Philip Broke’s _Shannon_. This victory restored, to a large degree, Britain’s sense of itself as the dominant naval power. The earlier American victories in the war at sea could now be viewed as anomalies. For the Americans, the boost these earlier victories had provided was significantly diminished. Burrows personally knew and admired Lawrence; Blyth (the _Boxer’s_ commander) had volunteered to serve as pallbearer at Lawrence’s funeral in Halifax. Burrows needed to win because America needed a win, but it was also personal. For his part, Blyth was expected to continue the reassertion of Britain’s naval mystique. So much of this was about perception. _Did it make any difference that this battle was witnessed from shore?_ Yes, it does. All of the other single-ship actions at sea were fought out of view of landsmen. This battle could be seen blow for blow, and the noise would have been something that would have made a big impression. Also, news of the two men-of-war out there off the Point had time to spread as Burrows took most of the afternoon of September 5th to gain the optimum position for his vessel before closing to engage the enemy. It was a show, albeit a deadly one. The spectators, the common people, possessed this battle in a way unique to the war at sea. _What relevance does_ Knights of the Sea _have to today’s naval forces?_ Train, train, train. Never assume that naval dominance guarantees continued naval dominance. The _Enterprise_ got off two accurate broadsides before the _Boxer_ got off its second broadside, even though the _Boxer_ had fired first. This is not surprising when one looks at the war at sea in its totality. With the exception of Broke’s _Shannon_ – known throughout the Royal Navy for the emphasis its commander placed on gunnery training – American crews were better trained, and American officers the equal or better of their British counterparts. British complacency led to embarrassing losses, which in the larger scheme of things eroded their mystique.
