The third largest city square in the world, Tiananmen Square has great cultural significance as the site of seminal events in China’s history. The 109-acre expanse is named after Tiananmen Gate, or the Gate of Heavenly Peace, that separates it from the Imperial Forbidden City to the north. Tiananmen Square was originally designed and built in 1651, but has been enlarged four times since; its current size dates from the 1950s when Chairman Mao Zedong started renovations with the aim of making the space capable of accommodating half-a-million people.

On May 4, 1919, more than 3,000 students from Peking University and other schools marched to Tiananmen Square to protest the signing of the Versailles Agreement, which gave the Chinese province of Shandong to Japan after Germany’s surrender in World War I. Slogans such as “struggle for the sovereignty externally, get rid of the national traitors at home,” expressed resentment at the perceived Allied betrayal of China, as well as the government's lack of protection for Chinese interests. What become known as the “May Fourth Movement” marked a watershed in which popular nationalism supplanted the thinking of a traditionalist intelligentsia as the principle driving force in Chinese society.

Tiananmen Square is arguably best known outside China as center of the student-led pro-democracy demonstration of 1989 that was brutally crushed in televised scenes watched around the globe. The protests were first triggered by the death of former Communist Party General Secretary Hu Yaobang, a liberal who lost a power struggle with hardliners over the implementation of political and economic reforms. Students gathered in Tiananmen Square to mourn Hu and voice grievances regarding inflation, limited career prospects and rampant corruption within the Communist Party. At the height of the protests, about one million people gathered to show their support.



Martial law was soon declared and up to 250,000 troops were dispatched to the capital to quell the unrest. On June 4, 1989, amid turmoil across the city, tanks rolled into the historic square to confront peaceful protesters and the iconic footage (below) of a single man blocking their advance was filmed. Several hundred or possibly thousands of civilians lost their lives in the crackdown.

On Oct. 28, an SUV crashed through barricades in central Beijing’s Tiananmen Square and came to rest ablaze beneath an oversized portrait of Chairmain Mao Zedong. Few concrete explanations have emerged about what happened and why, as China’s notorious censorship machine whirred into action, but officials say five people died and 38 were hurt in the incident. Tiananmen Square remains heavily guarded and police are reportedly searching for two ethnic Uighur suspects. (Radicals among the Muslim minority have been fighting a sporadic insurgency against Beijing rule for years.)
