Birds are not inherently scary. They're small and have hollow bones and mostly keep to themselves unless someone's handing out bread crumbs. So give credit to Alfred Hitchcock for masterly turning our fine feathered friends into terrifying agents of destruction in his 1963 thriller The Birds. What Hitch realized was that, while a single bird can easily be swatted away, a whole flock of them is a nearly unstoppable wave of feathers, talons and beaks. Indeed, what makes The Birds unique compared with other killer-animal films is the extent to which our heroes (society girl Tippi Hedren and smarmy lawyer Rod Taylor) are impotent against the ornithological threat. They can't fight back; they can merely watch helplessly as the birds ram into windows, poke out farmers' eyeballs and stab the exposed fleshy bits of terrified schoolchildren. In the end, there is no victory: the humans simply run away, hoping they are spared from the next unexplained avian apocalypse. Truly, the beaks have inherited the earth. micahernst ## Anaconda 
"Anacondas are a perfect killing machine," says Jon Voight, who plays a snake hunter with a dubious accent, early in Anaconda. "They strike, wrap around you, hold you tighter than your true love. And you get the privilege of hearing your bones break before the power of the embrace causes your veins to explode." Yes, it's that kind of movie. The film's nominal protagonists are documentary filmmaker Jennifer Lopez and her crew of B-listers (Eric Stolz, Ice Cube, a prestardom Owen Wilson) who are traveling down the Amazon in search of a reclusive tribe, but they're mostly there to be killed, in descending order of obnoxiousness. The real star is the titular 40-ft.-long snake, which keeps finding new and more impressive ways to pop out from nowhere, strangle people and them swallow them whole. This habit sets it apart from Voight, who prefers to chew the scenery before swallowing it. micahernst ## Arachnophobia 
Who isn't creeped out by spiders? The fact that they have eight legs is bad enough. Then there's all those eyes and bristles and pokey things. They're unnatural! So we'll excuse mild-mannered doctor Jeff Daniels for his fear of arachnids. While this 1990 Spielbergian horror-comedy serves as a satire of small-town social mores, there's something even more frightening than Daniels' nosy new neighbors: an infestation of fatally poisonous Venezuelan spiders. Though the movie takes pains to point out that not all spiders are poisonous death machines (some, it explains, are quite helpful), it's clear there's only one thing Daniels needs to do — man up and kill them all. When he takes a nail gun and an improvised homemade flamethrower to the spider nest, the point is made: a domesticated yuppie can be as tough as any John Wayne. micahernst ## Cujo 
Man's best friend? Not in this 1983 adaptation of horror master Stephen King's novel about a deranged dog. The Trentons — husband Vic, wife Donna and son Tad — seem to be a perfectly happy American family. That is, until we learn that the guilt-ridden Donna is sleeping with creepy family friend Steve. To add to the trouble, car problems bring the family in contact with rural mechanic Joe Camber and his son's dog Cujo — a once gregarious and lovable St. Bernard who was bitten by a bat and is slowly progressing into rabid insanity. Cujo is compelled to kill anyone in sight, and while we sort of root for him as he takes out Camber's drunken pal, when Donna and Tad's car breaks down at the mechanic's abandoned residence, things turn truly terrifying. Cujo, looking more and more satanic with each attempt to breach their automotive bunker, stalks the panic-stricken mother and child as they attempt to stay sane and conjure an escape. With no special effects or supernatural plot twists, Cujo makes for a realistic scare flick about a family with more than its share of issues. micahernst ## Them! 
The atomic bomb hit the New Mexico desert in 1945, and although it didn't wipe out civilization, it did produce car-size, radioactive ants with body-splitting mandibles and ear-piercing shrieks. The mutated bugs knock over trailers and tear down general stores in search of sugar, and it's up to a quirky scientist and his attractive daughter to help the authorities contain the horrific beasts before they proliferate and nationwide hysteria ensues. Of course, that's exactly what happens. What follows is a fight against the ants that involves the military, flamethrowers and an ominous government warning and curfew that perfectly capture the uncertainty and paranoia of the 1950s. Oscar-nominated for its special effects, the film became an instant hit with its surprisingly effective plot. Them! quickly became the quintessential B-movie creature feature and inspired a multitude of imitators. The film remains a fan and critic favorite in the sci-fi genre, boasting a 100% positive rating on the popular film-review site Rotten Tomatoes. micahernst ## Piranha 
Director Joe Dante may be best known for Gremlins, the undeniably awesome 1986 film about adorable little fur balls that turn ugly and raise hell when they get wet or are exposed to sunlight, but this 1978 collaboration with legendary B-movie producer and director Roger Corman about killer flesh-eating fish should not be ignored. Piranha is a pretty clear knockoff of the 1975 megahit Jaws, and it makes no attempt to be something it's not. A hackneyed plot — Operation Razorteeth created a strain of killer fish for use in the Vietnam War that (naturally) escape into civilian waters — and shoddy special effects raise the camp value as a drunk and an insurance investigator try to destroy the fish in the river before they make their way into the ocean, where they would cause the end of recreational swimming as we know it. A scene in which the bloodthirsty devil fish attack a children's summer camp and feed on the fingers and toes of helpless campers is genuinely disturbing, but mostly Piranha is low-rent, lowbrow fun. A young auteur named James Cameron (you may have heard of him) took a stab at the sequel, but the original reigns supreme. We can only hope Piranha 3D can do the franchise justice. micahernst ## Night of the Lepus 
When it comes to the genre of eco-horror films, viewers generally have to approach movies with a different set of expectations than those they would bring to, let's say, Citizen Kane or even, let's be honest, Con Air. Things like logic, cohesion, ambition and sophistication often go straight out the window. This is important to keep in mind when watching the massively entertaining train wreck that is Night of the Lepus. Based on the sci-fi novel Year of the Angry Rabbit, Night of the Lepus is the story of a town with a rabbit problem. Two scientists are charged with the task of developing a serum to disrupt bunny breeding patterns and decrease their population. Somehow (does it really matter how?), the serum turns the rabbits into gigantic, ravenous killers who proceed to terrorize the town. This sounds like a pretty typical plot for a horror film, but what makes Night of the Lepus a diamond in the rough is the utter absence of any scares. The scenes (of which there are many) of a herd of supposedly deadly rabbits running through the town are just images of normal-size bunnies running through small sets to make them look large. And unlike spiders and snakes, which are naturally scary-looking, a pack of fuzzy little bunnies is completely nonthreatening. Stick around for the climactic killer bunny–electric fence faceoff. micahernst ## Squirm 
Jeff Lieberman's cult horror classic Squirm proves that the saying "A little dirt never hurt anyone" could not be more wrong. A violent storm in Fly Creek causes power lines to fall, sending electrical currents into the ground and bringing up evil worms seeking vengeance. At first, residents of the tiny town are hesitant to believe city boy Mick when he finds a worm in his egg cream, until the creepy-crawlies turn up everywhere, including in lead character Geri's showerhead (a sick twist on Psycho's famous shower scene) and writhing down walls. In a pivotal nature-strikes-back scene, a man overturns a bucket full of bait worms while in a boat, and the earthworms proceed to bite and bore holes into his face. That'll learn him. micahernst ## The White Buffalo 
Deemed Jaws' western equivalent, The White Buffalo stars Charles Bronson as Wild Bill Hickok, a man tormented by his recurring nightmares of a savage albino beast. The giant buffalo's first appearance finds it charging into an Indian village, wreaking havoc and killing bystanders, including Chief Crazy Horse's daughter. Wild Bill sets out across dusty ghost towns and deserted landscapes in search of his tormentor, teaming up along the way with Crazy Horse, who confirms Bill's fears. The buffalo does not exist merely in Wild Bill's dreams but is an actual murderous beast. Bill proclaims, "if I don't kill this buffalo, this dream is going to kill me." The animal itself remains onscreen for only seconds at a time, just long enough to make us realize that sometimes it doesn't matter if it's all in your head — it'll still get you in the end. micahernst ## Jaws 
In this, the first true summer blockbuster, a lone great white shark trolls the waters surrounding the small island community of Amity. Despite his fear of the water, police chief Martin Brody obsessively investigates the vicious attacks and eventually follows the beast out into open water — where it tries to eat him, his two fish-hunting mates and their boat. The shark makes for the ultimate predator, striking at random and for no apparent reason.
