Before he lifted off on Star Trek, the young William Shatner's career got a boost with one of his two guest appearances on The Twilight Zone, starting with "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet." In this episode, Shatner is Robert Wilson, a salesman taking his first flight after having a nervous breakdown, one not helped by the gremlin he keeps seeing on the wing of the plane — a gremlin only he seems to see. Terrified that the creature is going to bring down the jetliner, Shatner takes a gun from a sleeping policeman — remember, these were the pre-TSA days — and opens the plane's exit to fire at the gremlin. Needless to say, Wilson is detained upon landing, but no one can explain the strange damage done to the fuselage of the plane. gilbertcruz ## Walking Distance (1959) 
In spring 2009, during an interview at TIME's office, Lost creator and Star Trek director J.J. Abrams geeked over his favorite Twilight Zone episode ever. We'll let him speak for himself:



"'Walking Distance' is maybe the show's best episode. It's about a businessman. He's almost 40, he's got a suit, and he hates his life. He's miserable. The stress of work is just getting him down. And his car breaks down in the middle-of-nowhere countryside. He goes to the gas station to get his car fixed and he realizes that he grew up very close to where they are. It's walking distance.



"So he says, 'I'm just going to take a walk back to the town I grew up in.' He gets there and he soon realizes he's walked back not just to where he grew up, but when he grew up. He's back in the time when he was a kid. And it's just this beautiful story of a guy who, as an adult, wants to go back to his young self, and tell himself to be aware of what it is to be alive, to be young, and to enjoy that. And of course, you can never go back and tell yourself that. It's a beautiful demonstration of the burden of adulthood, told in The Twilight Zone, which everyone thinks is a scary show, but it's actually a beautiful show. The Twilight Zone at its best is better than anything else I've ever seen on television." gilbertcruz ## The Hitch Hiker (1960) 
While this episode uses one of the most famous twist endings ever (if you've ever seen Carnival of Souls or even The Sixth Sense, you probably know what it is), it's hard not to be creeped out by the titular character's unrelenting nature. No matter how far Nan Adams drives, he's always there, by the side of the road, looking for a ride. Staged twice before as a radio play in the 1940s (both times starring Orson Welles), the episode also benefits from the use of the radio production's original music by Bernard Herrmann, most famous for his scores for Citizen Kane, Psycho and Taxi Driver. gilbertcruz ## Living Doll (1963) 
Talky Tina steals every scene in this episode — not bad for an inanimate object. Tina is the doll that young Christie receives as a present from her mom — a gift Christie's mean stepfather Erich says is too pricey. When he's left alone with Tina, a forerunner of creeptastic toys like Chucky, she retaliates. "My name is Talky Tina and I don't think I like you ..." she warns. At the end of the episode, Erich gets up to investigate a noise in the night, finds Tina directly in his path and trips. Sending him down the stairs to his death, she fulfills her creepiest and most famous threat: "My name is Talky Tina, and I'm going to kill you." gilbertcruz ## The Invaders (1961) 
This classic episode opens with an old woman, played by Agnes Moorehead, living alone in a rudimentary shack and speaking not a word. Soon surprised by tiny, hostile intruders who disembark from a wee flying saucer, she fights them, killing one. When she follows the other back to his ship, we're surprised to hear him warning his fellow ETs in English. Then we see it (spoiler alert): the side of the ship reads "U.S. Air Force." gilbertcruz ## The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street (1960) 
This episode of The Twilight Zone might have seemed all too familiar when it first aired in 1960\. Following the red scare of the 1950s, "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" depicts how the residents of a typical suburban neighborhood lose their marbles after a meteor flies overhead, causes a power failure and prompts a sci-fi-addicted resident to blame the incident on human-looking aliens. A witch hunt ensues, someone dies and Maple Street is never the same — and the twist revealed at the end leaves little hope for other towns. gilbertcruz ## To Serve Man (1962) 
A mysterious race of aliens called the Kanamits comes to earth, bringing with them a book titled To Serve Man that promises to solve all the world's ills. But this is The Twilight Zone. There has to be a twist. When humans — fat, happy and cured of their problems — board ships to visit the alien's home planet, they find out the double meaning of the mystical book's title. gilbertcruz ## It's a Good Life (1961) 
And you thought that kid from The Sixth Sense was spooky. Meet Anthony Fremont from Peaksville, Ohio. He's got mental powers that would put an X-Man to shame: he can make it snow, read people's thoughts and make electricity, TV signals, cars and a dog ... disappear. All this obviously scares the living daylights out of all the adults in his life, who tread lightly around him and make sure to praise his every move. That's until Dan the drunk shows up and tells little Anthony what a crappy kid he is. And what does old Dan get for it? He gets turned into a human jack-in-the-box. And nobody better tell Anthony they've got a problem with that. gilbertcruz ## Time Enough at Last (1959) 
It's one of TV's all-time great double twist endings. All Burgess Meredith wants to do is read his books; he's not interested in being a good bank teller, not really concerned about being a productive member of society. In fact, his only wish is for society to go away, so he can get back to sticking his nose into the pages. The day after his boss yells at him, Meredith takes his lunch in the vault, seeking some literary solitude just as a hydrogen bomb detonates above.



The world has been obliterated, leaving just the far-sighted Meredith and libraries full of books to coexist until the end of time. And then his glasses fall off his face, the lenses cracking, his dream becoming a nightmare. Only The Twilight Zone could conjure a way to one-up the annihilation of the human race — turning Meredith's personal apocalypse into a somber lesson about society's interdependence. gilbertcruz ## The Eye of the Beholder (1960) 
It's a story told almost exclusively through dialogue, unfolding with the patience of a radio drama. We hear the voice of the woman lying on the hospital bed, her head wrapped in bandages after the 11th surgery to correct her apparent facial disfigurement. She pleads with the doctors to remove the bandages to see if the procedure was a success — if she now looks like everyone else. But with the very first glimpse of her face, we know that our assumptions about her, and her condition, are way off.



The Eye of the Beholder was not only bold in its structure, refusing to look any of its characters in the eye — anyone but Rod Serling, that is — but the visual payoff waiting at the end of the journey was both shocking and poignant. Like all the great Twilight Zone moments, the visceral rush of this particular episode was followed soon after by a philosophical one.
