In the series’ first issue, by Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, Dr. Bruce Banner was irrevocably changed when he was belted with gamma rays while saving a teenager from a bomb he helped create. Writers introduced Banner’s cousin Jennifer Walters, the She-Hulk, in a title of her own in the 1970s. The original version of the Hulk was often shown as simple and quick to anger. His first transformations were triggered by sundown, and he would change back to being Banner by dawn. When Peter David began writing the series in May 1987, his stories showed that Banner had serious mental problems long before he became the Hulk. The Avengers is the first film in which the actor playing Banner also plays the Hulk, thanks to motion capture technology. The 3D-mold used to create the Hulk's body was modeled after Long Island bodybuilder and male stripper Steve Romm, while the Hulk's face was modeled after Ruffalo.
