### FAQ

#### Is a PMP certification worth it?

A Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification is widely considered a valuable certification for project managers seeking to advance their careers. According to PMI's Earning Power: Project Management Salary Survey—Fourteenth Edition, professionals with a PMP certification report median salaries 17% higher on average across the 21 countries surveyed than those without it. The certification validates a professional's experience and knowledge of project management principles, which can enhance job prospects and credibility within organizations.

#### What are the best certifications for project managers?

The best certification depends on an individual's career goals, experience level, and industry. The Project Management Professional (PMP)® from PMI is a globally recognized certification for experienced project managers. For those newer to the field, PMI's Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® is a common starting point. Other notable certifications include those focused on agile methodologies, such as the PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)®, and program management certifications like the Program Management Professional (PgMP)®. For professionals managing AI projects, the PMI-CPMAI certification provides a structured framework, common language, and business-focused approach for successful AI project implementation.

#### How does PMI support career growth for professionals?

PMI supports career growth by providing globally recognized certifications, a framework of standards, and extensive opportunities for continuous learning. Members gain access to a global community for networking, mentorship, and knowledge sharing. The organization also produces research and thought leadership on emerging trends, helping professionals stay current with skills in areas like AI, agile practices, and strategic business management. These resources are designed to help professionals at all levels enhance their skills and advance their careers.

#### What is the PMBOK® Guide?

The PMBOK® Guide, or A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, is PMI’s foundational guide to generally accepted project management knowledge and practice. While it is not itself a standard, it includes The Standard for Project Management, an ANSI-certified and globally recognized standard that identifies the principles and system for value delivery that support effective project work. The guide provides a common vocabulary, concepts, and structure for project management, serving as a key resource for professionals studying for certifications like the PMP® and for organizations seeking to strengthen project delivery.

#### How is AI changing project management?

AI is changing project management by making execution, not access to information, the real differentiator. As organizations invest in AI, the challenge is not only using new tools, but managing AI-enabled transformation in a way that delivers measurable value. Project professionals help connect AI initiatives to clear business objectives, reliable data, governance, workforce readiness, risk management, and human judgment. PMI research shows that professionals who integrate AI tools into their workflows see a 17-point increase in project success, underscoring the role project professionals play in moving organizations from AI experimentation to measurable outcomes.

#### What are the most important skills for a project manager?

Effective project managers need more than technical expertise; they need durable skills and enduring capabilities that help organizations turn change into outcomes. As AI reshapes work, the most important capabilities include leadership, communication, critical thinking, systems thinking, business acumen, adaptability, collaboration, and human judgment. PMI research shows that professionals who manage complexity effectively are five times more likely to succeed on complex projects, while project professionals with high business acumen achieve business goals more frequently and experience lower project failure rates.

#### How can I get involved with the PMI community?

Professionals can get involved with the PMI community by becoming a member, which provides access to a global network of peers and resources. Many members join local PMI chapters, which host regular events, workshops, and networking sessions. Online, PMI's projectmanagement.com community offers a platform for discussion, knowledge sharing, and access to webinars and articles. Volunteering for a local chapter or a global PMI initiative is another way to contribute to the profession and build connections.

#### What is the difference between PMP and CAPM?

The PMP (Project Management Professional)® and CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management)® are both certifications offered by PMI, but they target professionals at different career stages. The CAPM is an entry-level certification designed for individuals with little or no project experience, validating their understanding of fundamental project management knowledge and terminology. The PMP is for experienced project managers and requires a combination of formal education and years of documented project leadership experience, making it a more advanced and globally recognized certification.

#### How does PMI support social impact?
PMI supports social impact by helping individuals, nonprofits, NGOs, and communities use project management to turn purpose into measurable outcomes. Through the PMI Educational Foundation, PMI expands access to project management education for youth worldwide, including underserved and underrepresented populations. Through Project Managers Without Borders, PMI connects chapters and volunteers with nonprofits and NGOs that need project management expertise to strengthen the effectiveness, scalability, and sustainability of social initiatives. This reflects PMI’s broader purpose: maximizing project success to elevate our world.

A behind-the-scenes look at how cosplayers bring their favorite characters from Japanese anime, comic books and video games to lifePhotographs and story by Joseph Chi Lin

### Fandom

![Joseph Chi Lin](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/bltd3e739244e01c254/698a851e09208fce92421c3e/cosplay_01.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp&crop=16:9)

Cosplay is a form of role-playing in which enthusiasts dress up as their favorite Japanese anime, comic-book and video-game characters. Although some cosplayers simply don off-the-rack costumes, the truly dedicated create outfits from scratch. Brennan West, who goes by the cosplay alias Bur Loire, has made about 70 costumes over the course of her cosplay career. "I went to an anime convention back in 2005, knowing nothing about the fandom or what cosplay even was, and became instantly hooked!" she says. "For every convention, me and several groups of friends end up liking the same new series coming out, and every time, we end up wanting an outfit or two from that series! So we use conventions as an excuse to make them." Joseph Chi Lin

### Crossplay

![Joseph Chi Lin](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt36537c820cd9a4d2/698a851fd07533009de75649/cosplay_10.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp&crop=16:9)

ing — cosplaying as the opposite gender — is a common occurrence. Jackie Ohh, right, who goes by the cosplay alias RukawaGF, crossplays because she likes to portray her favorite characters, who happen to mostly be male. "Another reason why I prefer cosplaying as guys is because the girl cosplays normally involve showing a lot of boobs, legs and ass ... and it does get uncomfortable after a while, especially when some of the creepier people ask for pictures or stare at you blatantly," she says. Joseph Chi Lin

### Memento

![Joseph Chi Lin](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt91ac1919f01de196/698a851fd0753383fae75647/cosplay_11.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp&crop=16:9)

Tiffany Tezna, left, whose cosplay alias is Starlighthoney, and Cassandra May, a.k.a. Breathlessaire, pose for a photo shoot as characters from the anime Princess Tutu. A typical cosplay convention features many photo shoots. "Nothing is more rewarding than seeing other people's faces light up when they see you in your costume portraying a character they too also love," says Tezna. Joseph Chi Lin

### Sentiment

![Joseph Chi Lin](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt861cfcdc1eb202ac/698a8520929faddeb3c0127a/cosplay_12.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp&crop=16:9)

Reasons for cosplaying a particular character differ from person to person. Felicia Grundler, whose cosplay alias is FeliciaCat, plays Black Cat from the Spider-Man comic-book series for a personal reason. "Marvel Comics hold a really special place in my heart because I've been reading them longer than I can remember. Cosplay from comic books is like going back to my roots," she says. "Black Cat, a.k.a. Felicia Hardy, is one of the best femmes fatales in the Marvel universe and one of my all-time favorite characters. Cosplaying her is so much fun — she's witty and beautiful, and the fact that we share the same first name is icing on the cake." Joseph Chi Lin

### Costume Change

![Joseph Chi Lin](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt4a1697f2146fe584/698a8521b3fce30b180d1bb6/cosplay_13v2.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp&crop=16:9)

Most cosplayers perform as multiple characters in a single day. After a morning as Black Cat, Grundler changes and gets ready for her afternoon character, Ranka Lee, from the anime Macross Frontier. "Changing costumes through the day is great," she says. "First of all, it allows us the ability to have more than just a single costume a day. When you really get into characters, it's fun to switch things up by playing a sexy bombshell in the morning and then a cute pop star at night." To re-create the green eyebrows of her character, she first coats her eyebrows with a white primer, then uses makeup to tint her eyebrows green. "For the most part, these characters have flawless skin, thick lashes and perfect hair, so using makeup is essential to re-creating the character to the best of your abilities," she says. Joseph Chi Lin

### Bubbly

![Joseph Chi Lin](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt36b18b09e19240c9/698a8522b21a9caef750ea98/cosplay_14.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp&crop=16:9)

Grundler dons her wig and takes a quick moment to get into character. "Ranka is a really happy, cute and bubbly character, so I can't help but enjoy myself when I'm cosplaying her," she says. Joseph Chi Lin

### Dedication

![Joseph Chi Lin](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/bltf3325c29c952a66a/698a8523e6e84a2cd22b793d/cosplay_15.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp&crop=16:9)

Despite the many hardships required for successful cosplay, from uncomfortable costumes to oversize props, cosplayers love what they do. "It's addicting!" says Brennan "Bur Loire" West. "I also enjoy the challenge of seeing if I can make this design that shouldn't or couldn't exist in real life and make it so. Plus, I'm just a huge nerd!" Joseph Chi Lin

### Pandemonium

![Joseph Chi Lin](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt48cac2457906cfa3/698a8524b3fce34acb0d1bba/cosplay_02.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp&crop=16:9)

At Katsucon 2010, an anime convention held annually in Washington, D.C., a cosplayer's hotel room is transformed into a makeshift special-effects studio. "For our particular group, traveling to conventions is never light," says Caitlin Beards, whose cosplay alias is Lady Ava. "Between the four of us, we have suitcases, garment bags, plastic tubes for larger costumes, wig stands, props and usually at least one set of wings. And nine times out of 10, there is a separate bag for just shoes." Such preparation allows them to change into several outfits over the course of a single day. Joseph Chi Lin

### Wig Cap

![Joseph Chi Lin](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt56b9356354dbc0bb/698a8525d075331142e75656/cosplay_03.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp&crop=16:9)

Cosplayer Cassandra May, alias Breathlessaire, playing Princess Kraehe from the anime Princess Tutu, prepares to put on her wig after donning a wig cap. Although some cosplayers use bobby pins to tie up their hair, more-professional cosplayers prefer wig caps. "Running around a whole day in a wig squishes your hair, so you just either keep wearing a wig or take a nice relaxing shower afterwards," says May. "Showers are friends." Joseph Chi Lin

### Smoky Eyes

![Joseph Chi Lin](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt2a2072ceaad90767/698a8526cabb1d963ce58d93/cosplay_04.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp&crop=16:9)

Caitlin Beards, a.k.a. Lady Ava, has fake lashes attached for her cosplay as the video-game character Bayonetta. An integral part of any cosplay, artificial eyelashes help re-create the long lashes that are common in most anime and video-game characters. They are attached with a white adhesive that turns transparent when it dries. "For Bayonetta, we used various kinds of eye shadows and fake eyelashes to create her very smoky and defined eyes," says Beards. Joseph Chi Lin

### Meticulous

Dedication to detail truly brings a cosplay character to life. For Beards' Bayonetta, eyeliner was used to re-create the character's signature mole, while foundation was lightly applied on top to make it look natural. "Cosplaying is about expressing your love of a character or a series," says Beards. "I am very passionate about every character that I cosplay, making all the time, money and work worth it in the end. It's a great and unique way of expressing one's self without being one's self." ### Craftsmanship

High-end cosplay outfits require considerable time and resources to produce, often taking weeks and costing hundreds of dollars. This cosplay of Lynn Minmay, from the Japanese anime Macross, took Cassandra "Breathlessaire" May about a week and a half to produce. "The base outfit, I made in a day, but all the sequins that I added to it took forever!" she says. "I actually had to do them twice, since the first time I put them on, I didn't like how they appeared from a distance, so I took them all off and then started from the beginning. During this I ended up watching Season 1 of Supernatural and then Seasons 1 through 4 of Sex and the City." Joseph Chi Lin

### Mad Props

Accessories are often needed to complete a character's iconic look. A combination of cardboard, foam and vinyl tape was used to re-create Bayonetta's signature weapons. "My prop guns were made by the very talented Lionel Lum," says cosplayer Beards. "They were made specifically for me to use in order to capture the true feeling of the character, and his work is simply amazing." Joseph Chi Lin

### Metamorphosis

When wig, makeup and accessories come together properly, the cosplayer completes the transformation into an otherworldly character. "To create something from nothing is a powerful thing," says Beards. "And to know that I can make something that will make others and myself happy is why I love what I do. It's a great feeling when you put on your costume for the first time, with all the pieces, makeup, wigs and props, and you see yourself in the mirror and you know that it's all your hard work that made it possible." ### Ingenuity

Although most cosplay creations are emulations of popular Japanese anime, video-game or comic-book characters, some are original creations limited only by imagination. In this original steampunk-inspired creation, a cosplayer utilizes his technical expertise to incorporate a working fish tank with live fish as a backpack. Joseph Chi Lin
