A selection of images from his new book,Coming Back, New Orleans Resurgent ### Like a Hurricane  Photographer Mario Tama arrived in New Orleans on Aug. 29, 2005, after he was dispatched by the agency Getty Images to document what was shaping up to be one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history. Mario Tama / Getty Images ### Positive Sign  In 2008, Tama was dispatched to illustrate a story about the public school system and the way the city's school boards, starting from scratch, had created a network of public charter schools. In his book, Tama writes that the students are "reaching impressive new levels of achievement, independence, and accountability." The population, which scattered across the country in the wake of the storm, is back to almost 80% of its 2005 level; the $5 billion tourism industry is coming back to life; and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers — which a federal judge upbraided in 2009 for its negligent maintenance of the levees — is finishing a 350-mile (563 km) reconstruction of the walls that residents hope will finally accord them real flood protection. Mario Tama / Getty Images ### Hanging On  Two years after the disaster, Tama photographed Rita Gillett, above, and her husband Hazzert, who still lived in a home without electricity or gas because they were not able to secure government assistance to pay for repairs. Cooper apartments, which before the storm held about 1,000 families and was the city's largest housing project.
