Wilson (left), Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Apsley Cherry-Gerrard (right) are pictured upon their return from a winter trip to Cape Crozier in August 1911\. Due entirely to a conversation on polar exploration between Bowers and Sir Clements Markham, he received a telegram from Scott offering him a place on the Terra Nova without even undertaking an interview. Bowers is frequently praised by Scott in his diary: "Little Bowers remains a marvel — nothing comes amiss to him and no work is too hard." They're on the bridge of the Quest after having paid a visit to Southampton, England to supervise the fitting out of the ship. Visitors to the Freeze Frame website can read extracts from diaries, expedition reports, letters and other personal papers. Scott was a legendary British Royal Naval officer and explorer who led two expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second venture, he led a party of five which reached the South Pole only to find they had been preceded by Roald Amundsen's Norwegian party in an unsought "race for the Pole." On their return journey Scott and his team perished due to a combination of exhaustion, hunger and extreme cold. Scott Polar Research Institute Cambridge ### Christmas Celebrations  The British Antarctic Expedition of 1907-09 (seen here setting up a Christmas camp) was the first of three expeditions to the Antarctic led by Shackleton. It was financed without governmental or institutional support and relied on private loans and individual contributions. The expedition was a public triumph (the team got within a hundred miles of the South Pole) and Shackleton received a knighthood from King Edward VII. Digitalization of the incredible archive has been going since 2007\. The team faced many challenges as many photos were terribly damaged, which meant that they had to be restored using state-of-the art equipment. Indeed, some of the images are now so fragile they will never be publicly displayed. Eighty one years earlier, French explorer Jules Dumont d'Urville named them for his wife and they remain common along the Antarctic coast and nearby islands.
