Our friend and colleague passed away in Paris on October 5 at age 45. Here is a gallery of some of her greatest work.

Much of Boulat's early career was dedicated to covering the conflict in the Balkans.

Refugees flee fighting. In an interview with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Boulat commented, "You can show war without showing a gun, and that's interesting, in just one photograph."

Palestinian children cry at the funeral of their father, a Fatah fighter killed during an Israeli incursion. For the last few years of her life, Boulat based herself in Ramallah, covering the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Afghanistan, 2001

An Afghan family prepares the body of an eight-year-old boy for burial. The child died from cold in a refugee camp near Herat.

Kosovo, 1999

Albanian victims of a massacre at Rogova are buried in a mass funeral.

Pakistan, 2001

An Afghan refugee reaches safety in Quetta, Pakistan. Told by the Taliban that she must leave in order to be safe, this woman and 34 others share a tiny mud hut in the border town.

Afghanistan, 2001

Drought and war forced this Afghan family to seek humanitarian aid in Herat. Much of Boulat's work focused on the plight of the dispossessed.

Kosovo, 1998

Serbian forces allegedly killed approximately twenty Albanians in a massacre prior to the start of the Kosovo War. Many of the victims were women and children.

Pakistan, 2001

A collection of bullets and a paper tulip decorate a government office in Quetta.

Albania, 1997

Because of a pyramid scheme, many Albanians lost their savings. They rioted, leading to the collapse of the government and outright anarchy. Boulat covered a group of citizens who overran an army barracks.

Kosovo, 1999

Ethnic Albanian girls celebrate liberation by NATO troops. The house in the background belonged to a Serbian family.
