The comic recorded over 20 records, wrote five books and performed 14 HBO comedy specials. Fox / AP ### Wisdom in Humor  Carlin loved to make people uncomfortable but perhaps was a little less gruff than his public persona let on. "Scratch any cynic," Carlin said, "and you’ll find a disappointed idealist." He was 71. He abandoned his clean-cut image, grew his hair and embraced the counterculture in his stand-up routines. CBS / Landov ### The Seven Dirty Words  Perhaps Carlin's most groundbreaking routine was about the "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television". The shtick helped Carlin re-cast himself as a cultural rebel, satirize religion and openly joke about drug use. It also got him arrested, above, on July 22, 1972 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
