On December 17, a young fruit seller named Mohammed Bouazizi, humiliated and frustrated by the way he was treated by a female police officer, marched first to the municipal government offices and then to the governor's building, hoping to complain, but no one would see him. Less than an hour later, he returned to the governor's office, poured paint thinner over himself and set himself on fire. He did not die immediately; he remained alive for 18 days, during which time, news of his act reached the capital and President Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali (second from left in this photo) who came to visit him in the hospital. AFP / Getty Images ### Riot Police  The politicians who filled the vacuum created by Ben Ali's departure were viewed as not much better, as the top positions were filled by his associates and acolytes. Despite the deposed president's departure, the anger of the protesters was not quelled and the streets of Tunis remained tense. Gun battles continued to break out between the military and Ben Ali loyalists. And young people continued to make their voices heard. Whereas the protesters demanding Ben Ali's resignation had included many from Tunisia's more affluent classes, the protesters who followed included a higher percentage of trade unionists and supporters of the outlawed Islamist party. Martin Bureau / AFP / Getty Images ### The Anger Spreads  The death of Bouazizi in early January galvanized the youth of Tunisia, where education levels are high, but employment opportunities are limited. He "was the drop of water that made the whole cup overflow," says Tunisia's wildly popular rapper El Général, whose YouTube videos about the event rapidly went viral. Within days of Bouazizi's death, young people had taken to the streets in nearby towns, like Regueb, where protesters clashed with security forces on January 10, above. AFP / Getty Images ### On Fire  The small revolt leaped from town to town; this shot was taken on January 12 in Cité Ettadhamen, an area on the outer reaches of the capital, Tunis. The uprising was fueled by a steady stream of text messages, Twitter and Facebook updates. By now it had a name, The Jasmine Revolution, named for the national flower. Reuters ### Escalation  As the revolt hit the capital, President Ben Ali began to feel the pressure. He gave a hastily scheduled television address on January 13, promising to give in to some of the protesters' demands, like easing censorship. Meanwhile, in the streets, demonstrators clashed with security forces, who opened fire in downtown Tunis, killing an unknown number (The New York Times reported that "dozens" had been killed by January 13.) Hedi Ben Salem / AFP ### In the Streets of Tunis  The frustration of the young protesters had been growing for years, as the unwritten compact their parents' generation had made with President Ben Ali — economic opportunity in exchange for political freedoms — had come undone. Though Tunisia offers excellent educational opportunities, the job market had shrunk, a process accelerated by the slowdown of the global economy. Estimates suggest that 25% of the youths of Tunisia are unemployed.
