Reubens took matters into his own hands and started his own stage show based on a character he and SNL player Phil Hartman had been developing for a few years. Despite this, the Pee-wee Herman franchise raked in more than $25 million with its toys, clothes and other merchandise. A mediafrenzy ensued, and CBS stopped airing reruns of Pee-wee's Playhouse. All Pee-wee-related merchandise was pulled from Toys "R" Us stores. Despite the negative publicity, Reubens' friends and fans rallied around him.
