Inventor Walsh traces the idea of it to his college days, when he and his housemates would eat pizza and nobody used plates. One time, he tore up a pizza box and handed out improvised plates. His housemates were amazed, but he dismissed it. "I thought it was standard operating procedure," he says. Ten years later, people were similarly amazed when he tore up a pizza box at a friend's daughter's birthday party. Now equipped with the wisdom of a degree in business, he decided to start his own company. David Friedman ### Art Fry  Post-It NotesIn 1968, Fry's co-worker at 3M invented a not-very-sticky glue that nobody knew what to do with. A few years later, Fry was in church, frustrated that the little pieces of paper he stuck in his hymnal as bookmarks kept falling out and he realized that a not-very-sticky glue could be used to make small pieces of paper temporarily stay in place. David Friedman ### Monica Williams  Pacimals, a huggable pacifierFor Williams, a physician by training, inspiration started with her own infant daughter. "She loved her pacifier but kept spitting it out," she says. "That's natural, most children will thrust their tongue forward, which means the pacifier comes out. But they still want the pacifier and they don't have the coordination to replace it. So I started by just sewing the pacifier onto a bunch of stuffed animals." Williams then designed a stuffed animal pacifier in a size that's easy for a child to hold. As the child gets older, the pacifier can be converted to a teething ring and then removed completely, leaving the child with a comforting doll. David Friedman ### Tami Galt  Fold-it & Go Portable WagonGalt describes her inspiration: "It's like a children's wagon only it folds up like a camping chair and fits in a bag so you can take it with you. My idea came from going to the farmer's market and having too much to carry. My back always hurt afterwards, and I'd be full of bundles. I looked around and everybody was using these old lady wire carts and I figured I would never be old enough to look like a little old lady with a wire cart. But I saw a few people with little red wagons and I thought those looked cute, but I couldn't get them into my car so I thought there must be a way to make them fold down easier so you could fit them in your car." David Friedman ### Tom Roering  Wilcraft, an amphibious ice fishing vehicle Roering explains, "The Wilcraft is designed to bring a fisherman onto the ice in a very convenient, mobile and safe fashion. It's set up much like a summer fishing boat: electronics in place, ice auger, lunch, beverages. Once you're on the ice, you drill your holes, line up the holes that are inside the Wilcraft, and press a couple switches to drop the hull onto the ice. That seals out the airflow coming into your shelter." Roering also markets a version that's used by rescue personnel to safely and quickly retrieve people who fall through thin ice. David Friedman ### James Delaney  Trampoline video game controllerDelaney's wife is the origin of his idea: "Nyssa asked me to get her a minitrampoline as a gift. After about a week of using it, she said it was getting boring. Then she asked if it could be hooked up to a video game. I figured that this would be easy. It turned out to be a little harder than I imagined."Delaney is presently attempting to obtain a patent. The current version of the controller relies on a solid piece of plastic instead of LEGO, which is employed in the prototype version pictured above. David Friedman ### Tony Pagoto  Wiremate, a wire management system Pagoto's molded resin boxes organize, protect and conceal the cluttered tangle of wires that accumulate behind desks and home entertainment systems. Of his foray into the world of inventions, Pagoto says, "Dreams and determination aren't only for the young. My partners and I are 'older guys'. I am 64 and my partners Don and John are 64 and 68\. We have known each other for over 50years. They say never to go into business with friends and relatives, but we have done that and have benefited greatly from it." David Friedman ### Christopher B. Garvey  Temperature responsive roof ventA patent attorney in Amityville, New York, Garvey holds a patent for a temperature-responsive roof vent. It automatically opens and closes in response to temperature changes, without the use of electricity. Thus far, Garvey has yet to bring his invention to market. David Friedman ### Joe Carolan  Quick-Finders, a guidance system for rescue personnel A reflective device engineered to pick up light from multiple angles, Quick-finders are affixed by a homeowner to the baseboards outside bedroom doors. That way, says Carolan, when a fire fighter is crawling through smoke "we can pick up the reflectivity and know where the bedroom is instead of going into the closet, the bathroom, or the kitchen." Carolan got his idea during a training drill. "We were crawling through a smoke-filled building looking for a child and we couldn't find the bedroom. And it was 2 feet in front of me. I figured out there had to be a better way. The a-ha moment came right then."
