On April 26, 1986, an explosion in Reactor 4 of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine released large quantities of radioactive contamination into the air over Ukraine, Belarus and huge portions of Europe. After the accident, the area around the plant was evacuated, and a 19-mile (31 km) exclusion zone was created around it. Maxppp / Landov
