He became an Elizabethan nobleman, adventurer and politician and was best known for the infamous Gunpowder Plot, a scheme intended to overthrow the British government and assassinate the then monarch King James by blowing up the houses of Parliament. The site had the tacit support of the hacking group , which has vowed to "destroy" Facebook on Nov. 5 because of its privacy policy. Guy Fawkes' legacy is not fading. Denis Doyle / Getty Images ### The Conspirators  The Gunpowder Plot associated with Fawkes is traced to a small group of English Catholics led by Robert Catesby, who planned to assassinate the Protestant King James and replace him with his daughter, Princess Elizabeth, who was third in the line of succession. In this engraving of eight of the 13 conspirators, Fawkes is third from the right. In May 1604, Catesby devised the Gunpowder Plot to kill James and as many Members of Parliament as possible. At a meeting at the Duck and Drake Inn, Catesby outlined his plan to Fawkes, Thomas Percy, John Wright and Thomas Wintour. They became the first to agree under oath to join the conspiracy. Bridgeman Art Library ### Remember, Remember the Fifth of November  Catesby's plan involved blowing up the houses of Parliament on Nov. 5, 1605\. The reason for that date? King James was due to open Parliament that day. At first, the group tried to tunnel under Parliament, but it changed tactics when Thomas Percy obtained a cellar under the House of Lords. It was filled with barrels of gunpowder, and Fawkes, because of his munitions experience in the Netherlands, was given the task of creating the explosion. The plot was discovered when the cellars were searched the night before the opening of Parliament. Fawkes was caught, while his fellow conspirators fled; they were subsequently cornered and either died resisting arrest or were captured and executed. When Fawkes was asked what he was doing in possession of so much gunpowder, he reportedly answered that his intention was "to blow you Scotch beggars back to your native mountains." On Jan. 31, 1606, Fawkes and three others were executed at the Old Palace Yard at Westminster, opposite the building they'd attempted to destroy. The 17th century engraving above records the scene. Bridgeman Art Library ### A Penny for the Guy  The intended victim of the plot, King James, created a holiday from its failure: he turned the existing custom of celebrating a monarch's accession with nationwide bonfires into an annual event on Nov. 5\. Even though the law creating the holiday was repealed in 1859, the tradition remains to this day. One of its most famous phrases is associated with youngsters standing beside homemade effigies of Guy Fawkes, demanding, "A penny for the Guy!" Ron Burton / Keystone / Getty Images ### Some Guys Are Bigger than Others  Bonfires have been accompanied by fireworks since the 1650s, and it became a custom to burn an effigy, which usually tends to be of Fawkes himself. (The likenesses of Paul Kruger and Margaret Thatcher have also made their way onto the bonfires.) The "guy" is often made by children using old clothes, newspapers and a mask. The 2006 film V for Vendetta, adapted from the Alan Moore and David Lloyd comic-book series of the same title, portrays a near-future dystopian society. Natalie Portman plays Evey, a working-class girl who must determine whether her hero has become the very menace she is fighting against.
