Here are 10 films about life for ladies behind bars ### Sentenced  On July 20, 2010, Lindsay Lohan is to enter a California correctional center for having violated the terms of her probation. If the prison library has a good DVD collection, Lohan might borrow the following 10 films to see how Hollywood has portrayed life, and sometimes death, behind bars. For 80 years, women-in-prison (or WIP) movies have been a suppurating subgenre of the usually all-male prison melodrama. Sometimes ennobling, often lurid, they depict women as fighters, lovers and schemers. Most WIP films are of interest only to cultists of certain tastes. A few gave actresses the chance for high emoting they got nowhere else. But any one of these would probably be less depressing for Lohan to watch than her own Parent Trap or Mean Girls, made back when she was Hollywood's next big star. David McNew / AP ### Paradise Road, 1999  By this time, when middle-age actresses were an endangered species in mainstream movies, they occasionally found solidarity in group projects, like this high-minded Australian drama directed by Bruce Beresford (Tender Mercies, Driving Miss Daisy). Oscar winners Glenn Close and Frances McDormand join young comers Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Ehle in a platoon of women imprisoned by the Japanese on Sumatra in World War II; they alleviate their ordeal by performing classical choral works. Inspiring and frighteningly well-acted, the film is similar to the 1980 TV-movie Playing for Time, starring Vanessa Redgrave, Jane Alexander and Verna Bloom as Nazi death-camp inmates who prolong their lives by agreeing to play music for the officers. Perhaps Lindsay Lohan should catch one of these films. Seeing all these laureled ladies may be as close as she'll get to an Oscar. Everett ### Chicago, 2002  The only WIP movie to receive the Academy Award for Best Picture (not to mention a Supporting Actress win for Catherine Zeta-Jones), Chicago was based on Maurine Watkins' 1926 Broadway play and its 1975 musical version directed by Bob Fosse. Set in the 1920s and mining the same rich loam as The Front Page — corrupt lawmen, predatory newsmen and winsome cons — the story throws two murderesses, faux-naïve Roxie Hart (Renée Zellweger) and world-hardened Velma Kelly (Zeta-Jones), into a prison run by Mama (Queen Latifah), the typical tough lesbian warden. But this one spells out her demands in song in "When You're Good to Mama." ("Let's all stroke together/ Like the Princeton crew./ When you're strokin' Mama,/ Mama's strokin' you.") The movie's message: when all life is show business, notoriety is celebrity. That's a truism Lindsay Lohan can take to heart, and we don't mean Roxie. Everett ### Ladies of the Big House, 1931  The movies had just learned to talk, and often they loved to talk tough. The hit prison film The Big House, with its brawling bravado, spawned a number of stir-crazy melodramas, including this early WIP winner, directed by Marion Gering for Paramount. Citywise but soulful Kathleen Storm (Sylvia Sidney) has the decent guy Standish McNeil (Gene Raymond) in her arms but the rotten crook Kid Atkins (Earle Foxx) in her past. Kathleen and Stan are framed for murder and sent to his-and-hers prisons. Among her cellmates are a full retinue of stereotypes: the heavyset matron (Jane Darwell) with the mannish haircut; Kid's ex-girlfriend (Wynne Gibson), out for revenge against Kathleen; the hawk-faced stool pigeon, whose fiercest enemy is the blues-lovin' black woman (Louise Beavers); and the pregnant Latina who wails, "My baby won't be born in prison." It's as if the genre had already created its own clichés at this early stage. Everett ### Ladies They Talk About, 1934  Barbara Stanwyck, the greatest Hollywood actress never to win a competitive Oscar, is a gun moll sent to prison, where she meets the usual bunch of broken dames and mannish women and spits out reams of tough-gal dialogue. ("Yeah," she barks at a prison rival, "and when they add you up, whadda you spell?") Directors Howard Bretherton and William Keighley get it all done in a wind-sprint 69 minutes, in one of the last of the pre-Code melodramas made before the industry had to clean up its act. The film's genesis would have made a pretty good movie too: it was based on a play co-written by Dorothy MacKaye, who'd done time in the women's unit of San Quentin as an accomplice to the murder of her husband Ray Raymond by Paul Kelly. (All three were Hollywood actors.) When she got out of prison, she married her husband's killer, then died in a car crash nine years later. Thus are the wages of stir. Everett ### Caged, 1950  Trying to save her husband after he was fatally injured in a heist, Marie Allen (Eleanor Parker) is wrongly convicted and sent to a women's prison where the warden (Agnes Moorehead) may have progressive ideas, but the real boss is Hope Emerson's ultra-butch giantess of a lifer. "Let's you and me get acquainted, honey," she growls to Marie. "You may be a number to others but not to me." When Marie discovers she's pregnant, the infirmary nurse asks if the father can help pay the bills. Marie says the father is her husband, and he's dead. "Another bill for the state!" the nurse snarls. "Get dressed." Co-written by Virginia Kellogg (who'd worked on the 1940s crime epics T-Men and White Heat) and directed by John Cromwell (father of L.A. Confidential's corrupt police captain James Cromwell), Caged earned Oscar nominations for Parker, Emerson and the screenplay. Gallows humor and acerbic aphorisms abound; as inmate Kitty Stark (Betty Garde) says, "In this cage, you get tough or you get killed." Everett ### I Want to Live!, 1958  Most WIP dramas are B movies, sometimes Z's, but this one was A all the way. Robert Wise, who later directed West Side Story and The Sound of Music, steered Susan Hayward to a Best Actress Oscar. She brings all of her Brooklyn grit to the role of Barbara Graham, a true-life hard case who was the third California woman executed in the gas chamber. In jail on a murder rap, Barbara can't break the habit of talking snarkily to the police, her fellow cons and even those who try to save her. ("Life's a funny thing," says a sympathetic psychiatrist, to which she snaps, "Compared to what?") Hayward plays it tough right to the end: heading for the gas room, she says, "Just this once, I wish it wasn't 'ladies first.' " The real Barbara Graham's last words were worthy of Stanwyck at her most bitter: "Good people are always so sure they're right." Everett ### Love Camp 7, 1968  R.L. (Lee) Frost, the try-everything auteur of '60s soft-core cinema, directed horror comedies (House on Bare Mountain), sexy westerns (Hot Spur), fake documentaries (Mondo Freudo) and artsy erotica (Love Is a Four-Letter Word). With Love Camp 7, he and producer Bob Cresse more or less invented the WIP Nazi sexploitation subgenre. Two WAC lieutenants (Maria Lease and Kathy Williams) are parachuted into Germany to infiltrate a women's camp run by Commandant Cresse, where the comely Jewish inmates serve as prostitutes for Nazi officers, or "whores for the Third Reich." Purportedly based on fact, the film is really a vigorous blend of clichés from two grindhouse genres: death row and death camp. From this lurid stew — and from Spain's bad-movie maestro Jess Franco's 99 Women, made the same year — bubbled the next decade of WIP movies. R.L. (Lee) Frost, the try-everything auteur of '60s soft-core cinema, directed horror comedies (House on Bare Mountain), sexy westerns (Hot Spur), fake documentaries (Mondo Freudo) and artsy erotica (Love Is a Four-Letter Word). With Love Camp 7, he and ### Women in Cages, 1971  The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) proclaims that Gerardo de Leon is "the most-awarded director in the history of the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences." Women in Cages, his 64th film, earned no prizes except the eternal affection of WIP fans. In this Roger Corman–produced epic, Pam Grier — she of the noble scowl and gravity-defying physique — plays Alabama, an American woman (from Harlem; go figure) who's railroaded into a Filipino jail, whence she plans her escape into the devouring jungle. Quentin Tarantino, who cast Grier a quarter-century later as the lead in his Jackie Brown, has rhapsodically described Women in Cages as "harsh, harsh, harsh." Everett ### Caged Heat, 1974  "White-hot desires meting cold prison steel!" proclaimed the posters for this debut feature from Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs). Unjustly convicted Erica Gavin arrives at a prison inhabited by tough-gal types at their apogee, or maybe their parody. Special mention goes to Barbara Steele, zombie princess of 1960s Italian horror films, as the prison's grim, wheelchair-bound superintendent, and to John Cale, formerly of the Velvet Underground, for his haunting harmonica score. Caged Heat just noses out Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS — starring statuesque Dyanne Thorne as a Nazi camp warden who performs "medical experiments" to prove that women could withstand more pain than men — as the definitive WIP movie in a great year for the genre. Everett ### Chained Heat, 1983  A decade after The Exorcist, Linda Blair was all grown up with no place to go but WIP movies. A mixed-race prison population — with rival gangs run by blond slut-goddess Sybil Danning and the Afro-tastic Tamara Dobson — chafes under the rule of the penitentiary's sadistic warden (John Vernon). A drug lord on the side, he invites the inmates to play with him in the Jacuzzi he has in his office. Really. The same year, Chained Heat had an Italian sister in Bruno Mattei's ultra-lurid exploitationer Women's Prison Massacre, starring Laura (Black Emanuelle) Gemser as a reporter undercover in a prison of unusually extreme depravity. "Makes Scarface look like a Sunday school picnic!" the ads boasted. These two tarnished gems must have exhausted the genre. The great era of lowlife WIP movies was over.
