In this photo, the U.S.S. Arizona sinks into the harbor shortly after the assault. The Japanese offensive surprised the world as well as the press; at the time the planes struck, Landry and a reporter were approximately 100 miles (160 km) off the coast of Pearl Harbor, working on a story about naval exercises in the Pacific. Bob Landry / Time & Life Pictures / Getty Images ### Timing  Landry's photos, shot after the attacks, were some of the first images to come out of Pearl Harbor for TIME and LIFE magazines; many publishers scrambled to cover the Sunday-morning attacks, using grainy photos from press wires that in many cases were taken by service members and amateur photographers. Some publications, including TIME, worked through Sunday night to add the news to issues that had already been sent to print. Others were less fortunate; Look magazine, for example, planned its issues in advance and was unable to cover Pearl Harbor for several weeks. This photo by Landry shows the sinking of the U.S.S. Roosevelt called Dec. 7, and beyond would be subjected to government censorship in order to protect military-unit information and weapons details. This delayed the publication by weeks at a time, and these particular images by Landry were not published until Feb. 16, 1942, two months after the attacks. While these pictures represent a large portion of the scarce professional and evocative photography taken at the time of the tragedy at Pearl Harbor, they were not the first of Landry's images to be published.
