After moving to Paris, he began to paint somber, melancholy images of beggars, drunks and prostitutes, subjects chosen perhaps to reflect the woeful state of his own finances. These monochromatic paintings, with their shades of blues and blue-greens, made between 1901 and 1904, became known as Picasso's blue period. This abstract painting is noted for the intense colors of blue, purple and green and the complex, crude lines. The retrospective will run until Aug. 1, 2010, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Instead of vagabonds and laborers, Picasso's canvases were dominated by harlequins and circus performers. The canvas above, painted during this time, was damaged recently when an art student fell into the painting, leaving a 6-in. tear in the lower right corner. The repair took three months; the piece was restored in time for this exhibition.
