The purpose of the shoot was to provide LIFE magazine with an image it could use on its cover, but McCullin and the band did far more than what the job required, as John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr posed and goofed around in a variety of locations. The shoot has become known in Beatles lore as the "Mad Day Out." A Day in the Life of the Beatles, published by Rizzoli, collects 100 images from that day. Don McCullin / Contact Press Images ### Kaleidoscope Eyes  Most of the shoot was done in black and white, but it includes a number of color shots — some, like this one, that were taken in a studio. In the introduction to the book, McCullin writes, "I used Ektachrome, and Ringo's chrome yellow shirt jumped out of the blue of his suit. I turned on a wind machine. It was chaotic. I'm not a studio photographer; I'm a battlefield photographer. I knew how to deal with certain kinds of photographic calamaties, but not on this scale." The light was terrible, and I was struggling with reloading my cameras. There was an old upright piano, and they started fooling around with it." McCullin writes, "I think everything Lennon did was a protest. Every statement he made seemed to come out of anger. There were many contradictions to him. We knew of Don from his war photography ... We'd been photographed by just about everybody ... Avedon, Parkinson, Bailey. We knew how good Don was. We thought, We've got to be the war. We'll provide the battlefield, and it'll work. He'll just click into action. That's exactly what happened." "We all lay around with a huge floppy dog in this strange science-fiction space," McCullin writes (the dog is behind Lennon in this frame). "The day was a hit-and-run accident. They just threw themselves into situations. They completely opened themselves. They gave me every opportunity, and they took over. It was a blessing they did."
