The most famous of the early winners was Angelo Siciliano, above, better known to the world as Charles Atlas, who as the winner of competitions held in New York in the early 1920s was declared the "World's Most Perfectly Developed Man." The Mr. Universe contest routinely draws entrants from dozens of countries, while gyms like Baghdad's Arnold Classic, above, can be found in virtually any country. The contest rules include no description of the physical qualities a winner must possess to claim the title, nor do they lay out any restrictions on the methods one can use to attain the ideal form. It does, however, state that "at the discretion of the contest organizer, tanning color may be used." Scott Barbour / Getty ### Mr. Universe Begins  Despite Atlas' early notoriety, competitive bodybuilding remained a rarity until the 1940s, when several groups began to organize contests for men to show off their muscles. In England, the National Amateur Bodybuilders Association (NABBA) christened John Grimek the first Mr. Universe in 1948\. Bettmann / Corbis ### Arnold Arrives  No one has boosted the popularity of Mr. Universe more than the Austrian-American Arnold Schwarzenegger, who in the late 1960s won the Mr. Universe title four times, three times as a pro and once as an amateur. In the photo above, he celebrates his 1967 amateur victory with friends in a restaurant in London. Schwarzenegger's dominance of the sport combined with his personal charm helped launch a successful career in Hollywood and politics, burnishing the Mr. Universe title along the way. Pictorial Parade / Getty ### Incredible  Like Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno used his bodybuilding success to develop a career in Hollywood, most notably as Bill Bixby's alter ego in the television series The Hulk. But unlike Schwarzenegger, Ferrigno was christened Mr. Universe by the NABBA's American rival, the International Federation of BodyBuilders, which was forced to abandon its claim to the title in 1976, the last year that Ferrigno won. In addition to the NABBA, there was the IFBB, which, together with celebrity bodybuilders Joe and Ben Weider, sanctioned the Mr. Olympia contest, while Columbus, Ohio, serves as the annual host of the Arnold Classic, started by you-know-who. It now also offers the title of Ms. Figure, the rules of which state that the winner should have a "feminine shape and proportion while retaining a 'trained look' and low body-fat levels, but not carrying development nor definition to an extreme."
