Jim Jones  The Peoples Temple Agricultural Project, as it was formally known, was founded in the 1950's by Indiana native James Warren "Jim" Jones, who preached a quasi-socialist philosophy that he called "apostolic socialism." By most accounts a highly paranoid man, Jones relocated his group to the South American nation of Guyana in 1974, in order to avoid increasing media scrutiny in the U.S. and, in his words, to create a "socialist paradise" and community based on his own communal-agrarian ideals. San Francisco Examiner / AP ### Grim Task  The dispensation of so many bodies presented the State Department with a difficult problem. Issues like deciding whether to perform autopsies on all the victims and finding a mortuary prepared to handle the large volume of bodies delayed the repatriation efforts for many months. Some Temple members wrote of their desire to leave all their assets to the Soviet Union. One unsigned letter read, "We did not want it this way. When we heard (that Congressman Ryan was killed) we had no choice. We would be taken. We have to go as one, we want to live as Peoples Temple or end it. We have chosen. It is finished." AP ### Survivors  Several Temple members survived the suicide. In addition to Odell Rhodes, Hyacinth Thrash, 84 (left, above), and Grover Davis, 79, were spared. Davis, who was hearing-impaired, missed the announcement over the loudspeaker to assemble; Thrash slept through the whole thing. Charles Harrity / AP ### Last Resting Place  As for Jones himself, his body was found in a deck chair, with a bullet wound in his head that a Guyanese coroner stated was consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot. David Hume Kennerly / Getty ### Congressional Inquiry  The trouble at Jonestown began with the arrival of Congressman Leo Ryan, right, who represented a district in Northern California where relatives of some of the cult members lived. Ryan, urged by a group calling itself Concerned Relatives to learn more about the Temple's activities, traveled to Guyana with government officials, journalists and members of the relatives' group. Greg Robinson / San Francisco Examiner / AP ### Murder at the Airport  During Ryan's visit, 15 Temple members asked to return to the United States with him and his group. Though they constituted a relatively small percentage of the 900 or so people living at Jonestown, the paranoid Jones was unable to stand the potential repercussions of the defections. Several of his loyalists trailed the delegation back to the Port Kaituma airstrip, where the Congressman's plane was waiting, and opened fire. Congressman Ryan and four other members of the group were killed. Eleven people were injured. Tim Reiterman / San Francisco Examiner / AP ### Shooter  The killings at the airport were begun by Larry Layton, in the unbuttoned shirt, above. Though Layton was known to be a Jones loyalist, he insisted on joining Ryan and his group shortly before they headed to the airstrip, saying he wanted to return to the U.S. as well. Once inside the plane, he produced a gun and started shooting. He was joined moments later by members of Jones' Red Brigade security team. Of all the gunmen, only Layton was convicted for the murders. David Hume Kennerly / Getty ### The Horror Begins  As the shooting unfolded at the airport, Jones gathered his followers and spoke to them of the need to commit "revolutionary suicide." According to one defector, the possibility of mass suicide had been discussed at Temple indoctrination sessions and had even been rehearsed at least two times. During the drill, Temple members, including children, lined up and took small glasses of red liquid to drink. They were told that the liquid contained poison and that they would die within 45 minutes. David Hume Kennerly / Getty ### No Longer a Drill  The deaths at Jonestown are considered the largest mass suicide in modern history. On a tape recording of the speech Jones made before the suicides began, the cult leader declared, "Death is a million times preferable to 10 more days of this life. If you knew what was ahead of you ... you'd be glad to be stepping over tonight." David Hume Kennerly / Getty ### The Poison  In the years prior to the tragedy, Jones had obtained a jeweler's license that allowed him to purchase cyanide, used to clean gold. The temple took in a half-pound of the poison each month. Also found at the compound were large quantities of potassium chloride. Needle-less syringes were used to squirt the drugs, mixed with Flavor Aid, into the mouths of infants. AP ### The Victims  Odell Rhodes, a Temple member who survived by hiding underneath a building, said that among the very first to line up for the poison were several mothers and their babies. He said that there was no panic or emotional outburst; that people looked as if they were "in a trance." Other accounts have suggested that the Temple members had no choice; that the camp was ringed by guns as the poison drink was distributed. AP ### Identities  About 870 passports were found by the first searchers to arrive on the scene. The difference between their number and the number of victims can largely be accounted for by the several dozen children born at the compound.
