The event has become a tradition throughout the U.S. and Canada and later inspired the creation of Bike Month. The League of American Bicyclists was founded in 1880, when bicyclists were known as "wheelmen." Will Sherman ### Sharpton Joins Critical Mass  The Reverend Al Sharpton joins New York City’s "Critical Mass," a loosely organized monthly bike ride promoting alternative forms of transportation. Sharpton joined the ride to highlight what he calls "common pattern of NYPD harassment." Though similar rides take place all over the world, New York City’s version has become increasingly perceived as a mass protest after hundred of riders were arrested during the city’s 2004 Republican National Convention. The priest at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in Manhattan had no problem obliging. Now in its 10th year, the spring event drew nearly 400 people, from bike messengers to daily commuters to casual riders. This year, for the first time, the names of 2007's fallen cyclists were read aloud. "It's a day to celebrate the beginning of the riding season, and to remember those we've lost," Goldstein said. Glen Goldstein ### Ghost Bikes  Spray-painted a spectral white and chained to a streetlight pole, this "ghost bike" commemorates the life of Habian Rodriguez, who was struck and killed there last September by a city bus while riding his bike in Flushing, Queens. He was 31\. The first-ever ghost bike appeared in St. Louis, Missouri in 2003\. Since then, similar memorials have appeared in more than 35 cities across the world, from Sao Paulo to Budapest, with each city adding its own touch. In Sao Paulo, for instance, bicycles hang down from the street lights. "I think for the families it helps them know they're not alone," said Leah Goldstein, one of the organization's volunteers, "We all experience these unsafe streets together." His mother, Audrey, continues to lobby local officials for better signs and bike lanes, though none have been installed since his death. The driver who hit him was never charged. An estimated 23 New Yorkers die each year in bicycle-related accidents, though statistics vary from agency to agency. Michael Simonitsch ### Love Stencil  In preparation for the influx of cyclists in May, volunteers for the bike advocacy group Time's Up! added symbols like this Love Lane stencil to bike pathways across New York. Since 2000, bike use in the city has increased by 75 percent to nearly 130,000 commuters every day. City officials recently announced plans to double current bicycle use by 2015, and double the amount of bike lanes to 400 miles (compared to the city’s 6,000 miles of city streets). Bush joy-riding on a new mountain bike from Israeli Prime Minister Ehmud Olmert. Olmert presented the gift during Bush's visit to mark the country's 60th anniversary. The Israeli-made bike came with another high-tech gadget — a GPS device pre-set with cycling routes on the President's ranch in Crawford, Texas. Bikes have carried political clout since their invention in the late 1800s. In North Korea, for example, the government has banned bicycles from public use, arguing they offer too much mobility. The group kicked off its tour in the mountains of Beirut and traveled through Syria, Jordan, and the West Bank. "We're hoping to dispel the myth that this region is only full of conflicts," the tour's founder, Detta Regan of Berkshire, England, told The Christian Science Monitor. "We want to tell stories of the hospitality and the love of people." In February, the League of American Bicyclists awarded Bloomberg with the Bicycle Friendly Community Award for his efforts to increase bike lanes and bike parking. This year’s event coincided with the 125th anniversary of one of the borough’s most famous landmarks—the Brooklyn Bridge. The Brompton models pictured here can be folded up in less than a minute and boast one of the smallest dimensions on the market. Other brands and models are triangular, some circular and some feature teeny-tiny wheels.The concept doesn't end with bikes either; riding enthusiasts have even carried the notion to bike accessories.
