During a career spanning more than a half-century, most of it spent at Vogue, he photographed many of the world's leading lights in austere and arresting poses. In the portrait of Truman Capote, above, Penn employed a stunt he used often in the 1940s: to position his subject in an enclosed, angular space. "This confinement surprisingly seemed to comfort people," Penn noted, "It soothed them. The walls were a surface to lean on or push against." In 1947, he took a picture of the most photographed models of the day, one of whom, Lisa Fonssagrives, he would go on to marry in 1950\. They remained together until her death in 1992. He would go on to provide images for more than 150 of the magazine's covers over the next fifty years. This black and white photo was used on the front of the April, 1950 issue. In the late fifties he started to pose his subjects in close-up against a bare grey background, finding insights of character in many of mid-century's great figures, like Marlene Dietrich, Joe Louis, and Pablo Picasso. He almost single-handedly revived a turn-of-the-century printing technique that relied more on platinum instead of the more conventional silver, a process that imbued greater permanence to the final product, but which required time-consuming preparation. Irving Penn / Morgan Library & Museum ### Guedras in the Wind, 1971  While on assignment in Peru in the late forties, Penn traveled on his own to Cuzco and photographed the people living in the mountainous region in their native dress, using the same techniques that he had employed to photograph celebrities and models. He would continue this kind of work for several decades, traveling to Morocco in 1971, above and the South Pacific. In order to bring his technique to such a remote location, Penn created a portable studio that allowed him to take advantage of natural light and yet still create the isolation that could be achieved in a photo studio with a neutral background. The result is a series of images that explore and celebrate cultural differences. The photos were collected in the very influential volume, Worlds in a Small Room, published in 1974. In his hands, a wad of gum became an object of beauty, a discarded cigarette butt an icon. He also photographed flattened paper cups, deli containers and rags in extreme close-up, a collection that was exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1977 in a show called "Street Material."
