At one point, he was believed to have been worth $24 billion. When the Colombian government, pressed by the U.S., began to wage war on him, he warred right back. In 10 years of carnage, he cost Colombia the lives of an Attorney General, a Justice Minister, three presidential candidates, more than 200 judges, 30 kidnapping victims, dozens of journalists and perhaps 1,000 police officers. Courtesy of Nicolas Entel ### A Lesson for Wannabe Drug Lords  In Los Pecados de mi Padre, Marroquín, above, delivers a message to Colombian youths, some of whom still view his father as a Robin Hood–like figure and are tempted by the legend of his wealth and power. "Marroquín knows his father was an evil man, and he doesn't want to be like his father," Lara says. "He says, 'Hey, I'm the son of Pablo Escobar. Don't be like my father.' Coming from the son of the most important and violent drug trafficker ever, that's an importantmessage for the Colombian people." Courtesy of Nicolas Entel ### At the Enemy’s Gate: Pablo and Juan Pablo  In 1982 Escobar, already a power in the cocaine industry, was elected to Colombia's congress, from which he helped undo an extradition treaty with the U.S. Around that time, he visited Washington with Juan Pablo. More than a decade later, Juan Pablo, 16, would be on the phone with his father long enough for the Colombian police to trace the call, track the fugitive drug lord down and kill him. When the teenager heard the news, he cried, "If it's true, I'll kill all the sons of bitches!" But he almost immediately repented his words. Now he is seeking reconciliation and forgiveness from the families of his father's victims. Courtesy of Nicolas Entel ### Killing the Justice Minister  In 1984 Colombia's Justice Minister Rodrigo Lara, shown here on vacation with his two sons, was one of the few crusaders against the country's $5 billion–a-year cocaine industry. In April 1984, on the streets of Bogotá, two young hit men, apparently on orders from Escobar, rode a red Yamaha motorcycle up alongside Lara's white Mercedes and pumped seven bullets into him. One of Lara's sons, also named Rodrigo, was just 8 at the time but helped bodyguards bring his bullet-riddled father to the hospital. The killing helped turn popular sentiment in Colombia against the drug lord. Courtesy of Nicolas Entel ### Assassinating a Presidential Candidate  Luis Carlos Galán, a journalist turned politician, angrily denounced the cartels. When he reportedly found out that Escobar was a member of his party, he ostracized him from the organization — and became a target. Shown here with his son Juan Manuel in a visit to Rome, he vied for the presidency of Colombia twice, in 1982 and 1989\. Escobar ordered the assassination of Galán, and he was killed by hitmen on Aug. 18, 1989. Courtesy of Nicolas Entel ### First Communion  In 1987 Juan Pablo took this picture with his father, then a fugitive, at his . By 1991, the drug lord had worked a deal with the Colombian government in which he would turn himself in and be incarcerated in a luxurious prison called La Catedral, complete with a king-size bed, private bath and Jacuzzi. Still, prison life, even in such surroundings, did not appeal to Escobar, and in July 1992, he managed to escape. Courtesy of Nicolas Entel ### Lavish Lifestyle  Before he became a fugitive, Escobar was the archetypal narco-emperor. Think Al Pacino in Scarface, which was made as Escobar was climbing to the heights of power. The Colombian accumulated a kingdom of private homes, property, helicopters, planes and lots and lots of expensive and antique cars. He also owned a private zoo. His cash seemed limitless, and gave him a sense of unbridled power. When a bounty was put on his head, he turned around and put a price on the head of each police officer whom his henchmen knocked off. Courtesy of Nicolas Entel ### Family Man  Escobar, shown here watching TV with Juan Pablo, was as lavish with his family as he was with himself. His son says that Escobar "did everything to keep us separated from his business." But, Juan Pablo continues, "if I wanted to be a doctor, he said he would give me the best hospital. If I wanted to be a hairdresser, he said he would give me the finest salon in the whole city." When Escobar was killed in 1993, Juan Pablo told TIME, "I will not try to avenge my father's death. (Rodrigo Lara is on the far left, while Juan Manuel Galán sits in front of the computer as his brothers Carlos Fernando and Claudio look over his shoulder.) After the drug lord's death, Juan Pablo, his mother and his sister shuttled from country to country looking for refuge.
