### FAQ

#### Is a PMP certification worth it?

A Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification is widely considered a valuable certification for project managers seeking to advance their careers. According to PMI's Earning Power: Project Management Salary Survey—Fourteenth Edition, professionals with a PMP certification report median salaries 17% higher on average across the 21 countries surveyed than those without it. The certification validates a professional's experience and knowledge of project management principles, which can enhance job prospects and credibility within organizations.

#### What are the best certifications for project managers?

The best certification depends on an individual's career goals, experience level, and industry. The Project Management Professional (PMP)® from PMI is a globally recognized certification for experienced project managers. For those newer to the field, PMI's Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® is a common starting point. Other notable certifications include those focused on agile methodologies, such as the PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)®, and program management certifications like the Program Management Professional (PgMP)®. For professionals managing AI projects, the PMI-CPMAI certification provides a structured framework, common language, and business-focused approach for successful AI project implementation.

#### How does PMI support career growth for professionals?

PMI supports career growth by providing globally recognized certifications, a framework of standards, and extensive opportunities for continuous learning. Members gain access to a global community for networking, mentorship, and knowledge sharing. The organization also produces research and thought leadership on emerging trends, helping professionals stay current with skills in areas like AI, agile practices, and strategic business management. These resources are designed to help professionals at all levels enhance their skills and advance their careers.

#### What is the PMBOK® Guide?

The PMBOK® Guide, or A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge, is PMI’s foundational guide to generally accepted project management knowledge and practice. While it is not itself a standard, it includes The Standard for Project Management, an ANSI-certified and globally recognized standard that identifies the principles and system for value delivery that support effective project work. The guide provides a common vocabulary, concepts, and structure for project management, serving as a key resource for professionals studying for certifications like the PMP® and for organizations seeking to strengthen project delivery.

#### How is AI changing project management?

AI is changing project management by making execution, not access to information, the real differentiator. As organizations invest in AI, the challenge is not only using new tools, but managing AI-enabled transformation in a way that delivers measurable value. Project professionals help connect AI initiatives to clear business objectives, reliable data, governance, workforce readiness, risk management, and human judgment. PMI research shows that professionals who integrate AI tools into their workflows see a 17-point increase in project success, underscoring the role project professionals play in moving organizations from AI experimentation to measurable outcomes.

#### What are the most important skills for a project manager?

Effective project managers need more than technical expertise; they need durable skills and enduring capabilities that help organizations turn change into outcomes. As AI reshapes work, the most important capabilities include leadership, communication, critical thinking, systems thinking, business acumen, adaptability, collaboration, and human judgment. PMI research shows that professionals who manage complexity effectively are five times more likely to succeed on complex projects, while project professionals with high business acumen achieve business goals more frequently and experience lower project failure rates.

#### How can I get involved with the PMI community?

Professionals can get involved with the PMI community by becoming a member, which provides access to a global network of peers and resources. Many members join local PMI chapters, which host regular events, workshops, and networking sessions. Online, PMI's projectmanagement.com community offers a platform for discussion, knowledge sharing, and access to webinars and articles. Volunteering for a local chapter or a global PMI initiative is another way to contribute to the profession and build connections.

#### What is the difference between PMP and CAPM?

The PMP (Project Management Professional)® and CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management)® are both certifications offered by PMI, but they target professionals at different career stages. The CAPM is an entry-level certification designed for individuals with little or no project experience, validating their understanding of fundamental project management knowledge and terminology. The PMP is for experienced project managers and requires a combination of formal education and years of documented project leadership experience, making it a more advanced and globally recognized certification.

#### How does PMI support social impact?
PMI supports social impact by helping individuals, nonprofits, NGOs, and communities use project management to turn purpose into measurable outcomes. Through the PMI Educational Foundation, PMI expands access to project management education for youth worldwide, including underserved and underrepresented populations. A photographic look into the top-secret world of the legendary intelligence agency, more than six decades in the making

### Spiritual Father

![Bettmann / CORBIS](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/bltb8107641f1f922dd/698a61679d83e8c43ab9b2cd/cia_01.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp&crop=16:9)

Colonel William J. Donovan, known as Wild Bill, led the Office ofStrategic Services (OSS), America's World War II spy agency. Donovan andhis protégé Allen Dulles lobbied Franklin Roosevelt to continue aunified intelligence agency once the war was over (no such outfit existedbefore). At the end of the conflict, however, the super-secret OSS suffereda number of operational embarrassments and, more important, was mistrustedby the new President, Harry Truman, who disbanded it. Donovan's OSS,nevertheless, was the inspiration for the Central Intelligence Agency, which was created in 1947. Bettmann / CORBIS

### The Spy Chief Who Became President

![Bettmann / CORBIS](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt2aa9e313a5a5e2cf/698a61679d83e83e43b9b2d1/cia_10.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp&crop=16:9)

George H.W. Bush's appointment as director of Central Intelligence in 1976came on the heels of the Nixon resignation, congressional investigations andthe Agee revelations. Still, Bush, who was reportedly fascinated by covertoperations, managed to lift the morale of the battered agency in a tenurethat lasted less than a year, abruptly ending when Jimmy Carter becamePresident and gutted the agency's clandestine work. Bush's 355 days asdirector played a big role in his subsequent runs for President. According toJoseph Trento's The Secret History of the CIA, Bush as DCI metimportant anti-Castro Cuban-Americans who were key to his campaign forthe White House. Bettmann / CORBIS

### Preparing for the Post–Cold War World

![Roger Ressmeyer / CORBIS](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/bltcee3dcebf6560e55/698a6168b21a9cfaf450b20c/cia_11.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp&crop=16:9)

As the Soviet Union dissolved in the early 1990s, the CIA had to develop adifferent portfolio: the new focus would be terrorism even ascyber-intelligence-gathering and analysis seemed to push aside raw-intelligence-gathering by operatives. The "fusion center," pictured, was one of the command-and-control centers coordinating action againstterrorists. As the shift occurred, however, the agency had to do Cold War cleanup, including a lot more battles with the FBI, where the CIA believedSoviet and Russian moles continued to operate. Roger Ressmeyer / CORBIS

### The Biggest Moles

![John Hallisey / FBI / AP](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/bltd928806ab5def7bb/698a616916d88471cac3fc86/cia_12.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp&crop=16:9)

One of the biggest moles, however, turned out to be working for the CIA. InFebruary 1994, the FBI arrested Aldrich Ames, a CIA officer who had been sellingdata first to the Soviets and then to successor Russian intelligenceagents since 1985\. He is said to have given out information that led to thedeath of at least 10 agents. More post–Cold War spy arrests occurred, with ahuge catch taking place in February 2001 with the arrest of FBI agent RobertHanssen, who attended the same church as FBI Director Louis Freeh andSupreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Hanssen too had worked for Moscowsince 1985, if not a couple of years earlier. John Hallisey / FBI / AP

### A Major Failure of Intelligence

![Reuters / CORBIS](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt8de446f26ab0a3b8/698a6169457a524ba3d6b7c6/cia_13.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp&crop=16:9)

Terrorism and its new world of disorder visited themselves on the U.S. on Sept. 11, 2001, with the attacks on New York City and Washington,D.C. The CIA had indications as early as 1998 that terrorists had wanted tofly planes into the World Trade Center; indeed, the agency noted thattwo members of al-Qaeda had entered the country prior to theattack. But there was ineffective coordination between the CIA and the FBI.The 9/11 Commission castigated then CIA Director George Tenet for not having anoperational strategy in place to deal with terrorism, a charge Tenet denied. Reuters / CORBIS

### The All-Out War on Terrorism

![Christopher Morris / VII](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt4b9d39ec11f8d17f/698a616ab21a9c823d50b210/cia_14.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp&crop=16:9)

First the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan shattered the territorial base ofal-Qaeda and led to the detention of hundreds of likely collaborators ofOsama bin Laden's — albeit not the terrorist lord himself or his deputy. The invasion of Iraq was then justified as an extension of the war on terrorismas U.S. intelligence agencies continued to press for information to preventfuture 9/11s. The extraction of information, however, led to anexplosive debate over CIA torture and coercion, a controversy that continuesfrom the Bush Administration to the Obama White House. ### Cleaning House or Keeping House?

![SAUL LOEB / AFP / Getty](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt8fa9af571c7f6d89/698a616b457a522fc4d6b7cc/cia_15.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp&crop=16:9)

Obama's CIA director, Leon Panetta, must now preside over an agency about to beinvestigated by a special prosecutor looking into allegations of torturestretching back nearly a decade. But he faces a simultaneous problem: Howdoes the CIA operate going forward? As its history suggests, the CIA'sstrength, though not its virtue, lies in the shadows. If too much light isshone on the agency's operations, what will become of the work of spooks? SAUL LOEB / AFP / Getty

### The CIA’s Original Office in Foggy Bottom

![Ed Clark / Time Life Pictures / Getty](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/bltb3c2875d3de5b0a0/698a616bd07533f306e71efd/cia_02.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp&crop=16:9)

Before the CIA was founded, its responsibilitieswere coveted by J. Edgar Hoover and his FBI, which had noted successagainst Nazi spies during World War II. Indeed, in succeeding years, animosity between Hoover and the CIA resulted in a lack of cooperation andcoordination between the two agencies amid the Cold War — a relationshipthat would be replicated with turf wars and philosophical and operationaldifferences in the post-Hoover decades to come, all the way up to al-Qaeda'sattack on the U.S. on Sept. 11, 2001. ### The Archetypal Director of Central Intelligence

![Bettmann / CORBIS](https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt152d51dff3311b0d/698a616cd075332754e71f06/cia_03.jpg?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp&crop=16:9)

Allen Dulles may have been the fifth director of the CIA, but he served inthat office longer than any other person (1953-61) and had the most important historical link to "Wild Bill" Donovan. He hadworked with the OSS chief in recruiting German scientists and militaryexperts to work for the U.S., eliding any Nazi membership to sneak them intothe country. In August 1953, Dulles' CIA subverted the democratically elected butallegedly pro-Soviet government of Mohammed Mossadegh in Iran and installedthe monarchy of Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi. The following year, thegovernment of Jacobo Arbenz Guzman in Guatemala fell in a U.S.-sponsoredmilitary coup d'état. Dulles' directorship also saw the phenomenal exploitsof the CIA's Colonel Edward Lansdale in Southeast Asia — first deflating acommunist insurgency in the Philippines by getting a populist Presidentelected and then helping create the U.S.-backed regime in South Vietnam. The April 1961 attempt to overthrow the government of Fidel Castro in Cuba, however, proved to be Dulles' undoing. The plot, involving anti-Castroexiles, originated under the Dwight D. Eisenhower Administration butcontinued under John F. Kennedy, whom Dulles had actively cultivated evenwhile his old boss was still President. But the utter disaster of theinvasion, crushed by Castro in three days, diminished Kennedy's trust in theCIA chief, and by September 1961, Dulles had been fired. Dulles would be appointed byLyndon Johnson as a member of the Warren Commission investigating JFK'sassassination, providing impetus to decades of conspiracy theories. The physical legacy of Allen Dulles was a $46 million complex that took sixyears to build. The CIA director began campaigning for it as soon as he tookoffice, got funding for it in 1955 and contracted the company that erectedthe United Nations building and Lincoln Center in New York City to constructit. However, the headquarters was not completed until September 1961\. Bythat time, Dulles' record had been marred by failed anti-Soviet uprisings inthe Eastern bloc and, most important, by the disastrous Bay of Pigsinvasion. He would never move into the headquarters he inspired. AP

Dulles' onetime personal assistant, Hunt was a key figure in the CIA — planning the Bay of Pigs misadventure and devising the coup that overthrewGuatemala's President Arbenz. He also wrote pseudonymous spy novels and wasobsessed with national security. In 1970 he retired from the CIA out offrustration over policy and began working for the Nixon White House as oneof its chief "plumbers," going after leakers. He was arrested and convictedfor the Watergate burglary that eventually led to Nixon's resignationas President. Hunt would spend 33 bitter months in prison, complaining abouthow fellow conspirators were barely punished. He saw plots everywhere. Gjon Mili / Time Life Pictures / Getty

U.S. military personnel in 1974 work next to encrypting devices used forsecure communications with Moscow. During the Cold War, the CIA was key tokeeping track of Soviet strategic moves. The CIA faced crises whenMoscow launched Sputnik and shot down a U.S. U-2 spy plane. But it went on the offensive as well: overthrowing the elected Marxist government ofChilean President Salvador Allende (albeit a move at which Moscow shrugged)and arming the Afghan mujahedin to defeat the invading Soviet army — a strategy that unfortunately helped give rise to al-Qaeda. In 1975 former CIA case officer Philip Agee published Inside theCompany, an explosive best seller that condemned the agency's practices. The book not only provided detailed accounts of how spies operated and weremanaged around the world but also revealed the names of covert agents. Agee, who lived outside the U.S. for the rest of his life and died in Cubain 2008, published more names in subsequent books. In 1982, the U.S.Congress passed a law against revealing the identity of covert agents,a statute that came into play in the Valerie Plame scandal thatbedeviled the presidency of George W. Bush.
