Born in Boston, Bloomberg began his business career after attending business school at Harvard, starting out as a clerk at Salomon Brothers. He rose rapidly to general partner, where he headed equity trading, and later, systems development. Using engineering expertise he had picked up as an undergrad at Johns Hopkins, he created an in-house computer system that provided traders with up-to-the-minute data on bond prices around the world. AP ### Bloomberg News: Business Success  After leaving Salomon Brothers in 1981, Bloomberg approached Merrill Lynch with a proposal to develop an in-house information system similar to the one he created for Solomon Brothers. The "Bloomberg" system allowed traders to analyze the bond-trading data in a timely manner and quickly grew as a business, as Merrill Lynch put up $30 million to launch Bloomberg Financial Markets, renamed in 1986 to Bloomberg L.P. By 1995, the services of the company were syndicated with 35 radio stations and 188 television outlet and could be found on 46,000 desks worldwide. A registered Democrat, Bloomberg (right, with Giuliani during that year's Columbus Day parade) switched his party affiliation to run on the Republican ticket because of the already crowded Democratic field. Despite the many who doubted him, Bloomberg succeeded and won the election. On November 6, 2001 he became the city's 108th mayor. Timothy A. Clary / AFP / Getty Images ### In Office  During his first term as mayor, Bloomberg (seen above on victory night 2001) endured a lot of criticism and received little praise. Though he opened his wallet to support museums and the arts, he was attacked for raising taxes after promising not to during his campaign and proposing fare increases for public transportation. Complaints were made about crime levels and efficient systems for the city's homeless residents. Prior to his re-election campaign in 2005 Mayor Bloomberg had nearly a 60% disapproval rating. Henny Ray Abrams / AFP / Getty Images ### Turning Things Around  In 2005, Bloomberg spent $70 million of his own money to run for re-election in what was the most expensive and financially one-sided mayoral elections in U.S. history. Despite the criticisms he had endured, he was elected for a second term and things began to turn around. Deetermined to show the people of the city that he could get things done, he turned a $6 billion city deficit into a surplus, worked for stronger gun-control laws, labored to make improvements in the educational system, and engaged in substantial philanthropic endeavors. In 2009, after convincing the city council to lift the two-term limit and change the law prohibiting mayors from serving three terms, he gained re-election yet again. James Leynse / Corbis ### A Greener NYC  In an effort to make New York City more environmentally efficient, Bloomberg initially proposed a congestion pricing plan, whereby motorists driving south of 86th Street in Manhattan during business hours would be charged $8 a day. When that measure failed to gain the support of the state legislature, he introduced a downsized version the following year. Called "PlaNYC: A Greener, Greater New York," the program set goals for the reduction of emissions by more than 30%, the cleansing of all contaminated land in New York City, and the reclamation of 90% of the city's waterways for recreation. Stan Honda / AFP / Getty Images ### Education  As part of an initiative to reform the city's public education system, Bloomberg replaced the school board set up by the state and placed it under direct mayoral control. He raised teachers' salaries by 15%, promoted after-school programs to help students who are behind and helped strengthen the cell-phone ban in schools. Most recently Bloomberg launched the city's first mulitimedia campaign, "Wake Up!," which aims to combat academic absentees and truancy. The campaign's partners include local radio stations who will encourage attendance on-air every day. It will also provide pre-recorded "wake up" calls to the homes of students with a history of truancy with messages from celebrities like Magic Johnson, Jose Reyes, Big Boi, and Terrence J, among others, urging kids to attend school.
