### Nobel Peace Prize

Tutu held various distinguished positions in the 1970s, enabling him to actively fight against apartheid and for equality between races in South Africa. Using his degree in theology and his teaching background, he became the first black African Bishop of Johannesburg in 1975 and from 1976 to 1978 was Bishop of Lesotho. ### Since Apartheid

In 1994, South Africa held its first multi-racial elections. In 1995, Queen Elizabeth II appointed Tutu a Chaplain and Sub-Prelate of the Venerable Order of Saint John. ### Active Retirement

Although retired as Archbishop, Tutu was given the title of emeritus Archbishop of Cape Town and since then he has been an active speaker in achieving freedom, human rights, and democracy.
