His newest book, Made for Goodness: And Why This Makes All the Difference is on stands now. Selwyn Tait / Time & Life Pictures / Getty Images ### Nobel Peace Prize  Tutu held various distinguished positions in the 1970s, enabling him to actively fight against apartheid and for equality between races in South Africa. Using his degree in theology and his teaching background, he became the first black African Bishop of Johannesburg in 1975 and from 1976 to 1978 was Bishop of Lesotho. In 1984, he received the for his efforts, and was the second South African to receive such an honor. He has prevented racial war with his powerful, motivating words—"We will be Free!", "All of us!", "Black and white together!" In 1995, Queen Elizabeth II appointed Tutu a Chaplain and Sub-Prelate of the Venerable Order of Saint John. Later, Nelson Mandela appointed Archbishop Tutu as the chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Soon after in 1996, Tutu retired as Archbishop of Cape Town. Tim Graham / Getty Images ### Active Retirement  Although retired as Archbishop, Tutu was given the title of emeritus Archbishop of Cape Town and since then he has been an active speaker in achieving freedom, human rights, and democracy. In 2008, he spoke with the Dalai Lama to teach children in Seattle, Washington about compassion and spiritual connection.
