Outspoken on sex, love and relationships, he has been changing the way his readers think and act in and out of the bedroom since 1991\. In addition to a weekly column, he makes a weekly podcast, contributes to the New York Times and is the author of four books, among other pursuits. He has advocated for women's reproductive rights, and against proposition 8, Don't Ask, Don't Tell, and other causes. He is also a father and married man, having made Terry Miller, his long-term boyfriend and co-father to his child, an honest man by marrying him in Vancouver in 2005. John Keatley for Time ### Origins  Born in 1964 to Evangelical Catholics, Savage at one point studied to become a priest. He began doubting the church's views on topics from homosexuality to the virgin birth and by the age of 15, had dropped out of the seminary. When he was 18, he outed himself and his mother, who seemed fine about the revelation, cracked a little joke, but then panicked the next day and summoned a priest. She told the priest about her son, and the priest in turn came out to her too. He told her that it was better for Dan to live an openly gay life. Anthony Pidgeon / Redferns / Getty Images ### The Message  Savage originally planned to write a satirical column, in which he thought he would flip the paradigm of straight advice columnist offering uninformed advice to gay people, to a gay columnist offering uninformed advice to straight people. He quickly however found himself hearing from real people with real problems who sought him out for help. Twenty years later, Savage has emerged as a tireless and occasionally cranky devotee to the questions and conundrums his international audience finds themselves in. You know, when you're in love with someone and you make a monogamous commitment, it's not that you don't want to sleep with other people; it's that you refrain from sleeping with other people. The culture says if there is love there is no desire for others and that makes people essentially at war with their own instincts and leads to lies and deceit because you're lying and deceiving yourself." (From the Seattle newspaper, The Stranger) Washington Post / Getty Images ### On Coming Out  "I tell gay kids now that are thinking about coming out that you should really give your family a year, at the outside, where they can say hateful things and they can ask embarrassing jerky questions without you freaking out and you really have to parent your parents at that moment. They're going to have a tantrum and you know, if you are a parent, that tantrums are a strategy a child employs and if it works, the tantrums continue. And so you have to let your parents throw tantrums, but you can't let the tantrums work — you can't go back into the closet, you can't censor yourself and you can't protect them from the news about your life as an openly gay person. And eventually the tantrums stop." (From an appearance on The Colbert Report) John Keatley for Time ### It Gets Better  After a spate of gay teen suicides, Savage made a YouTube video with his husband about how they were persecuted as adolescents but now live happy, open lives. "When a 13 or 14-year-old queer kid kills himself or herself," Savage said to a Rutgers University audience, "what they're saying is they can't picture a future with enough joy in it to compensate for the pain they're in now." He used the internet to reach isolated gay teens, and then encouraged his audience to make videos of their own experiences. Two months later, the Project has almost 10,000 videos and over 30 million views. The videos range from ones made by people in the gay, lesbian, bi and transgender community to straight people.
