The killer bots of _Transformers: Dark of the Moon_ trampled their two new rivals, amassing $47 million in the movie’s second weekend, according to early estimates, and earning $261 million after just 12½ days in theaters to become the year’s biggest hit at the North American box office (dethroning _The Hangover Part II_). Chapter 3 in the terrifying toy story has done even better abroad, vrooming past the half-billion-dollar mark with a worldwide take of $558 million. Since the last _Transformers_ grossed a global $836 million, _Dark of the Moon_ should have a lot of battery power left.

[(See TIME’s review of _Transformers: Dark of the Moon_.)](http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,2080587,00.html)

Anticipating that the third installment of the Hasbro-Bay-Spielberg franchise would continue its marauding path through the plexes, two other studios counterprogrammed with new comedies aimed at specific demographics. Both did O.K. _Horrible Bosses_, an R-rated workplace farce with a savvy ensemble cast of harried underlings (Jason Bateman, Jason Sudekis, Charlie Day) and excruciating executives (Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, Kevin Spacey), pulled in $28.1 million over the weekend, to finish second. _Zookeeper_, starring Kevin James as an animal guru to talking beasties, cadged $21 million for third place. And Woody Allen’s time-spanning romantic frolic _Midnight in Paris_ edged toward an all-time record for the 75-year-old auteur — but with a significant asterisk.

Of the two mainstream comedies, _Horrible Bosses_ had more to crow about. Its take jumped 5% from Friday to Saturday, indicating excellent word of mouth, which was also reflected by an A-minus rating from men (B-plus from women) in CinemaScore’s polling of exiting moviegoers. Made for a relatively thrifty $38 million, the movie will earn back its production costs within a couple of weeks and become the fourth consecutive R-rated comedy — after _Bridesmaids_, _Hang II_ and _Bad Teacher_ — to outperform its pre-release forecasts and be a solid hit.

[(See TIME’s review of _Horrible Bosses_.)](http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,2081969,00.html)

_Zookeeper_ is an iffier proposition. After a strong showing in previews last year — and because Columbia-Sony was light on blockbuster summer fare — the studio shifted the James comedy from last fall to this weekend. _Zookeeper_ kept the kids entertained, with the under-18s giving it an A-minus CinemaScore rating. But the movie cost $80 million to make, and a film that expensive should earn much more than a quarter of its production budget on its opening weekend. Some of the blame may fall on a hazy apprehension of the PG picture’s target audience. Deadline Hollywood’s Nikki Finke wrote that _Zookeeper_ was rated PG-13, but IndieWire’s Anthony D’Alessandro pegged it as an R. The critics, not that they matter, didn’t care about the rating any more than they cared for the film. It pulled a libelous 15% on the Rotten Tomatoes aggregate site of reviewers.

Critics love _Midnight in Paris_: it has a gold-star 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. Real people like Allen’s movie too. It has landed in the box office’s top dozen six weeks straight, and has so far earned a domestic total of $38.7 million — more than Allen’s career-topping _Annie Hall_ and just below _Manhattan_ and the 1986 _Hannah and Her Sisters_, whose $40.1 million gross _Midnight_ is sure to pass this week.

Will that make it Allen’s most popular movie of all time? Not quite. Not hardly. There’s a little thing called inflation, and it applies especially to the price of a movie ticket, which was less than $2.5o when _Annie Hall_ and _Manhattan_ were released and about $4 when _Hannah_ opened. Today that average is above $8\. So far fewer people today are seeing a movie that grosses $40 million.

[See TIME’s review of _Midnight in Paris_.](http://specials.blogs.time.com/2011/05/11/midnight-in-paris-woody-allens-off-key-love-song/)

In France, where Allen is revered as a higher-IQ Jerry Lewis — and where _Midnight in Paris_ has earned more than $15 million — a film’s financial success is measured by the number of tickets sold. That standard is blessedly constant and does not require box office statsmasters to multiply today’s inflated ticket prices by those of bygone years to discover the popularity of new movies relative to older ones. Anyway, it’s the yardstick we used to compare _Midnight_ with Allen’s highest-grossing films of yore. And we found that, in so-called real dollars, Allen was a reliable hitmaker once upon a time:

 1\. _Annie Hall_ (1977), $38,251,425 then = $141.7 million today
 2\. _Manhattan_ (1979), $39,946,780 = $134.7 million
 3\. _Hannah and Her Sisters_ (1986), $40,084,041 = $89.1 million
 4\. _Love and Death_ (1975), $20,123,742 = $84 million
 5\. _Sleeper_ (1973), $18,344,729 = $82.7 million

In real dollars, _Annie Hall_, which won Oscars for Best Picture, Director, Actress (Diane Keaton) and Screenplay, remains Allen’s biggest hit — something like the _Bridesmaids_ or _Juno_ of its day — closely followed by his next comedy, _Manhattan_. Indeed, four of his five real-dollar winners came from his first full decade as a writer-director-star. Since then, only the 1986 _Hannah_ has ooched up into Allen’s ’70s empyrean. So _Midnight in Paris_ will have to take in more than twice what it has already earned to reach the top five of Allen’s domestic hits.

[(See pictures of Woody Allen’s career.)](http://www.time.com/time/photoessays/10questions/0,30255,1704138,00.html)

Given the Allen trajectory of this millennium — his previous 10 films, including the modestly popular _Match Point_ and _Vicky Cristina Barcelona_, earned a meager total of $86 million at the North American box office — the reception of his latest work must be warming to Allen and his distributor, Sony Pictures Classics. But in _Annie Hall_ terms, the success of _Midnight in Paris_ is the difference between boutique and boffo.

Here are the Sunday estimates of this weekend’s top-grossing pictures in North American theaters, as reported by Box Office Mojo:

1\. _Transformers: Dark of the Moon_, $47 million; $261 million, second week
2\. _Horrible Bosses_, $28.1 million, first weekend
3\. _Zookeeper_, $21 million, first weekend
 4\. _Cars 2_, $15.2 million; $148.8 million, third week
5\. _Bad Teacher_, $9 million; $78.8 million, third week
6\. _Larry Crowne_, $6.3 million; $26.5, second week
 7\. _Super 8_, $4.8 million; $118 million, fifth week
8\. _Monte Carlo_, $3.8 million; $16.1 million, second week
9\. _Green Lantern_, $3.1 million; $109.7 million, fourth week
10\. _Mr. Popper’s Penguins_, $2.85 million; $57.7 million, fourth week
