Fanboys need to find fangirls — to rustle up the nerve, and some heterosexual charm, that will persuade females to go to the movies with them. Then the oddball comic-book films these guys love, like the new _Kick-Ass_, will sell more tickets and maybe reign as No. 1 at the box office.

Instead, _Kick-Ass_ could finish an ignominious second this weekend to _How to Train Your Dragon_, now in its fourth week. _Dragon_, according to studio estimates, earned nearly $5 million less than it did last weekend, when it finished third. Yet the DreamWorks animated feature appears to be the weekend winner, over a game-changing movie that tries to critique the superhero genre even as it exploits it. The numbers: _Dragon_, $20 million; _Kick-Ass_, $19.75 million. An analysis on Monday of the photo finish could flip the rankings, but even a narrow victory wouldn’t keep _Kick-Ass_ from being a significant disappointment.

[(See the 100 best movies of all time.)](https://www.time.com/time/2005/100movies/)

The fine print: the weekend figures that studios produce on Sunday mornings, which appear in columns like this one, have less to do with rocket science than with science fiction. By early Sunday, a studio has hard numbers for its film’s Friday box-office earnings, rough estimates for Saturday and seat-of-the-pants speculation for Sunday, which of course hasn’t happened yet. Occasionally, the real grosses, which come out on Mondays, are significantly different. On Sunday, April 11, for example, _Date Night_ claimed the weekend’s top spot with $27.1 million, beating _Clash of the Titans_‘ $26.875 million. But the saber-metricians at Fox had predicted that Tina Fey and Steve Carell would enjoy a $7.1 million Sunday date, and that proved to be fully 30% higher than the $5.43 million the movie actually took in. When all receipts were counted, _Clash_ was the clear winner, with $26.6 million to _Date Night_‘s $25.2 million.

[(See TIME’s review of _Kick-Ass_.)](https://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1982315,00.html)

DreamWorks has predicted a $6.4 million Sunday take for _Dragon_, and Lionsgate a modest $4.85 million tally for _Kick-Ass_. If either forecast is off by more than a smidge, _Kick-Ass_ could win. In another close battle, _Date Night_ and the new comedy _Death at a Funeral_, starring Chris Rock and Tracy Morgan, are separated by only $300,000 in third and fourth place.

\[**Updated April 19, 2010:** A movie called _Kick-Ass_ has to have a But. Everyone’s favorite underachiever came in second in the early tally — but firmed up on Sunday to finish No. 1, with $19.8 million, according to Monday’s “actuals.” Meanwhile, _Dragon_‘s train was draggin’, completing the weekend at $19.6 million. In the race for bronze, _Date Night_ beat out _Death at a Funeral_, $16.7 million to $16.2 million. All these numbers were on the anemic side: this was the first weekend since Labor Day 2009 without a single movie grossing as much as $20 million.\]

But the big story is why _Kick-Ass_ didn’t kick ass. The saga of a teen with no superpowers who resolves to become a real-life superhero, and who encounters a daddy-daughter duo of slightly crazed crime fighters, Matthew Vaughn’s movie adaptation of Mark Millar’s violent, vivid comic book staked a premature claim as the year’s first hot cult item. Vigorously promoted by geek sites like Ain’t It Cool News and TIME.com’s Techland, _Kick-Ass_ also flourished a sheaf of enthusiastic reviews from mainstream critics, like this one.

The big holdout was Roger Ebert, whose review ran under the headline “A Child Kills and Is Bloodied, Hahahaha,” and who thundered that the movie was “morally reprehensible” for its use of a 10-year-old girl character as a four-letter-word-wielding assassin. (Ebert was much easier on the weekend’s other new R-rated entry, writing, “Oh, I know a lot of _Death at a Funeral_ is in very bad taste. That’s when I laughed the most.”) The _Kick-Ass_ denunciation, from the nation’s most prominent film critic, simply gave the movie more free publicity, alerting audiences to a small picture they may not have heard about. One way or another, _Kick-Ass_ had enough word of mouth for industry swamis to foresee a robust weekend: $28 million (Box Office Guru), $29 million (_Entertainment Weekly_) or $30 million (the Los Angeles _Times_).

[(See TIME’s review of _How to Train Your Dragon_.)](https://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1975321,00.html)

These numbers happened to be about 50% too optimistic — a major miscalculation. _Kick-Ass_ earned a so-so $7.65 million on Friday (including Thursday midnight shows), then dipped 5% on Saturday. Over the same two nights, every other film in the top 10 saw a jump in revenue on Saturday: _Dragon_ was up 109% (kids still go to Saturday matinees); _Date Night_, 40%; _Funeral_ (whose audience was more than half female), 19.4%; _Clash_ (the Vaughn movie’s only competition for the young male action demographic), 63%; Miley Cyrus’ _The Last Song_, 37%; Tyler Perry’s _Why Did I Get Married Too?_, 53%; _Hot Tub Time Machine_, 44%; _Alice in Wonderland_, 89%; and _The Bounty Hunter_, 44%. Clearly, _Kick-Ass_ exhausted its core contingency on Day One. And because fanboys are a solitary species, the movie couldn’t pile up numbers that, say, _Date Night_ did. That leads industry observers to a startling conclusion: movies that sell tickets in pairs do better than those that sell tickets one at a time.

In indie action, the satirical comedy _The Joneses_, starring David Duchovny and Demi Moore, earned a solid $554,000 on 193 screens. The Latino true-life sports-inspirational drama _The Perfect Game_, with Cheech Marin as the coach of the first Mexican team to win the Little League World Series, took in $494,000 at 417 venues. In showcase openings, the Oscar-winning foreign film _The Secret in Their Eyes_ and the quasi-documentary _Exit Through the Gift Shop_, featuring the reclusive-exhibitionist British graffiti artist Banksy, both did nicely in a few theaters.

These are the quirky or specialized films that the big studios don’t even consider buying. Mind you, the major companies also turned down the chance to distribute _Kick-Ass_. In the weeks before the movie opened, that seemed a foolish, timid decision. Now it looks like good bookkeeping.

Here are the early estimates of the weekend’s top-grossing pictures in North American theaters, as reported by Box Office Mojo:

1\. _How to Train Your Dragon_, $20 million; $158.6 million, fourth week
 2\. _Kick-Ass_, $19.75 million, first weekend
3\. _Date Night_, $17.3 million; $49.2 million, second week
4\. _Death at a Funeral_, $17 million, first week
5\. _Clash of the Titans_, $15.8 million; $133 million, third week
6\. _The Last Song_, $5.8 million; $50 million, third week
7\. _Why Did I Get Married Too?_, $4.2 million; $54.9 million, third week
8\. _Hot Tub Time Machine_, $3.5 million; $42.5 million, fourth week
9\. _Alice in Wonderland_, $3.5 million; $324 million, seventh week
10\. _The Bounty Hunter_, $3.2 million; $60.4 million, fifth week
