The Press: On the Spot

TIME

The Boston Traveler’s Photographer Frank Gushing was out on assignment when he heard a police broadcast of what sounded like a hotter story 2½ miles away. A tough youngster with a gun, chased by the cops, had seized a boy as a shield and was holding off a dozen policemen. The youngster was taking pot shots at the cops, and threatening to shoot his hostage if they came closer.

Twice Frank Cushing called his city desk, finally got permission to go after the story. When he got to the scene, he clambered to a roof about 30 feet from the boys without being spotted, and, before the policemen disarmed their quarry, took the news photo of the week (see cut).
