Oregon, the U.S. Census Bureau reported, is now the fastest-growing state in the union. In nine years of Pacific Coast boom the state’s population has increased 59.3% (to an estimated 1,736,000).
California, which has gained 3,758,000 residents since 1940, was also making records. It had now passed Pennsylvania as the second largest state in the U.S., a position Pennsylvania had held since 1830.
