In Elmont, L. I., John Hecker went to spend the night with his friend John Jackson. Guest Hecker, to provide better light, set an oil lamp on a stove. It exploded. Host Jackson, to put out the fire, emptied a gallon jar on the flames. It contained kerosene.

In Naples, Filomena Ducci bore twins, the second pair in 14 months, named them Vittorio and Bruno.

Firearm

In Manhattan, Negro Conrad Miller was arrested, charged with carrying a “concealed weapon”: a mousetrap with two .22-calibre cartridges fixed so as to fire when the trap snapped.

Patient

In Los Angeles, after 43 years, Mrs. Elsie Pearl Minser tired of supporting her husband, paying him taxi fare to drive her to work in his car, paying him for cutting the grass in their yard, obtained a divorce.

Reason

Small Julia Hatcher, pupil at Hatcher School, Marked Tree, Ark., raised her hand. Said Julia: “I want to leave the room.” Asked teacher: “Why?” Replied Julia: “Because the room is on fire.” Out marched the children. Down burned the school.

In Lowell, Mass., police halted Frank W. Shuflat, found him loaded down with $100 worth of merchandise, leading on a leash a docile police dog, watchdog of a restaurant he had just robbed.

Reitsch

In Berlin, Pilot Hanna Reitsch climbed into an autogiro standing in Deutschland Halle, took off, sailed up to the cupola, circled the hall, landed where she started from.

Freshman

In Bloomington, Ind., freshman Charles L. Templin sold fountain pens to earn his way through Indiana University. Police arrested him when they found the pens were stolen from the university bookstore.

Cash

As fee for marrying Michael Wallace, 59, and Anabelle Banks, 52, Police Judge Chris Fox of Oakland, Calif. received a note: “Dear Judge: I’m short of cash but I will remember you when the Townsend Plan is the law of the land.”
