They were to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the entry into the sisterhood of the Reverend Mother Mary Seraphim, first public jubilee of a Poor Clare ever held in the U.S. Cardinal Hayes said a few praiseful words, read aloud a cablegram of felicitations from the Pope. Priests celebrated mass. A choir of friars sang. But not a person in the jubilee throng laid eyes on the Reverend Mother Mary Seraphim. Poor Clares are strictly cloistered. Clad in a rough, grey robe and cloth sandals, that 73-year-old Irish-born nun heard the celebration in her honor from behind a screen.
