U.S. At War: Closed for the Duration

Some queer new shortages rose on the U.S. landscape last week:

> In Miami Beach, a dearth of barbers forced many a soldier and workman to down an old masculine prejudice, sneak into a beauty shoppe, settle back to have his hair trimmed by a beautician.

> In eight big cities, department stores prepared to disgorge their air-conditioning units, turn them over to war plants which need them worse. (Synthetic rubber and high-octane gasoline plants cannot operate without air conditioning.)

> In Los Angeles, the 80-ft. cable railway which had carried hundreds of passengers a day up steep East Bunker Hill ever since 1904 finally came a cropper to priorities on repairs and manpower.

> In Atlanta, the zoo’s big baboon, Tommy, beloved by thousands of schoolchildren, went into a decline for lack of bananas.
