¶ Equaled the 100-yd. free-style world record he had set the week before (TIME, March 27) in 49.7 seconds. That time had broken Ford’s previous record—50.7 seconds—which in turn had broken the 17-year-old record set by Johnny Weissmuller.
¶ Set a new Yale pool record for the 50-yd. free-style U.S.—22.2 seconds—a tenth of a second away from Henry Kozlowski’s world record.
¶ Won the 150-yd. backstroke event in 1:36.8. Harry Holiday Jr.’s world record is 1:31.5.
