Last week T. S. Matthews became editor of TIME, succeeding Henry R. Luce, who continues as editor-in-chief of TIME, LIFE and FORTUNE. Roy Alexander succeeded Matthaws as managing editor.
Thomas Stanley Matthews, 48, born in Cincinnati, was educated at Princeton and Oxford, started in journalism as a proofreader and make-up man at the New Republic, and later became associate editor. Joining TIME as Books editor in 1929, he was appointed assistant managing editor in 1937, executive editor in 1942, managing editor in 1943.
Eben Roy Alexander, 50, born in Omaha, was educated at St. Louis University, entered journalism in 1921 as a reporter on the St. Louis Star, four years later went to the Post-Dispatch, and in 1939 joined TIME as a Business writer.
He was appointed a senior editor of TIME in 1943, assistant managing editor in 1946, executive editor in 1947.
